Fairy-land Children’s Center, For Creative Learning – Pune School
what you see – This Pune Children’s Center is located in a beautiful old colonial bungalow surrounded by lush foliage and creepers. It is a real joy at first sight. The school has two levels. On the ground level is the playgroup class while on the first level is the mini kindergarten and the toddler class. Each classroom is decorated with posters and the walls are painted with popular cartoons such as Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, alphabets and numbers. Despite its proximity to the busy Deccan Gymkhana, this place seems blissfully free of noise and pollution.
What you get – This Pune Children’s Center was started by Neelima Ranade who is the principal and owner of the school. She has extensive experience in teaching and also has a child psychology degree from America. The center has four programs to offer. The first is the children’s group which is for children in the age group of 15 months to 2 years. This is a stage of transition from homes to the first school experience, so the focus is on getting children used to the school environment. The children are helped with their mothers, who are part of the various games and learning exercises. We noticed some children who, with the help of teachers, were trying to scoop sand from the ground into their buckets. We were informed that this helps in motor coordination and concentration of the child. Classes take place on alternate days – Monday, Wednesday and Friday – from 10:00 to 11:00.
Then we got to see the playgroup for the age group of two years and above. These classes take place between Monday and Friday from 9.15 to 11.15. The class begins with traditional prayers such as the Gayatri Mantra or Saraswati Puja. We were told that in addition to the regular English rhymes they were taught Hindi and Marathi songs to give them a better understanding of the local languages. After the initial learning lessons where basics of alphabets and numbers are taught, they are given some kitchen copiers. We saw some boys rolling chapattis as their mothers and girls prepared tea for their teachers. Children are also consumed in these classes.
The mini-kindergarten classroom is the largest and the most brightly decorated of all. This class involves activities that would help them easily adapt to the larger schools. They are taught to handle creative toys, building blocks, drawing, matching alphabets, stamp crafts and more. The books for all this are prepared by the teachers. They even have a library of 500 books where the children are read stories. These classes are from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 11:30. Every Friday they have a singing routine where the children sing their nursery rhymes to the tune of their music teacher’s instruments such as the tabla or the harmonium. This session brings a lot of joy to the young minds.
The last program is the young achievers program for children between the ages of four and six. It is an after school nursing program that involves encouraging manners, playing interesting games, encouraging reading habits and more. Neelima Ranade believes that up to the age of six children have a strong grasping power and the things learned at that tender age stay with them forever. This extracurricular program is from 16:00 to 17:30 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Our verdict – The school does not believe in a fixed curriculum. So there is innovation in their programs on a continuous basis. Their motto is to bring fun and learning together and the school seems like an extension of home.
