Hitting Lessons and Are Batting Cages Bad For Your Swing?

In this article I’m going to go over why most batting cage pitching machine setups are harmful for your baseball swing and a major hitting tip that many baseball coaches fail to recognize and teach during their hitting lessons.

One of the most important hitting lessons that will affect the quality of your kid conditioning the right swing into their body is the type of equipment they use to take batting practice. You ever wonder why your kid can hit in batting practice when you pitch to them but when they have to hit off the pitching machine such as during their hitting lessons or during baseball practice they can’t hit for nothing? Well I have the answer for you. It’s not you or your kid, it’s the pitching machine, let me explain.

In a game the ball comes downwards from the pitchers hand to home plate, and therefore you want to have a slight uppercut so that the bat head will be on the same path as the baseball coming in to maximize the chance of making solid contact. So the one thing you definitely DON’T want to do is practice the opposite of this that happens when you take batting practice at most commercial batting cages.

The truth is that at most commercial batting cages the pitching machine is set 3 – 4 feet in the ground and actually shoots the ball upwards, which is the total opposite of what happens in a real game. In a real game the ball comes downward from the pitchers hand to home plate. So if you take your kid to a batting cage to condition the proper swing in your kid’s body or for hitting lessons, you’re going to want to avoid the pitching machines that are deep in the ground and shoot the ball upward. You’re going to want to go to the batting cages that the pitching machine is either level with the ground or slightly above the ground so that the ball pitched follows a slight downward path as would in a game. If you do this, you will condition the proper swing path into your kid’s baseball swing. This is a huge hitting lesson!

One other thing you will want to look for also is for batting cages that have pitching machines with an arm, which allow you time the ball just like facing a real pitcher in a game. The other kinds of pitching machines with the wheels do NOT represent how a real pitcher throws in a game, and just spits the ball at your kid with really no way to time the pitch and will probably do more harm than good. I would highly recommend avoiding those pitching machines with the wheels, unless you want to just use them to practice hitting curve balls and you can really get the timing down. Otherwise they are going to do more harm than good to your kids baseball swing and you’ll just be wasting your money on hitting lessons for your kid.

By using the baseball practice tips I mentioned above you’ll be able to make measurable progress during your hitting lessons much faster, instead of taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back, because now you’ll be using and practicing with the proper hitting equipment.

Now that your kid doesn’t need to be frustrated during their hitting lessons, they can go out there and make consistent solid contact with the baseball. Along with impress their coaches, teammates and most importantly impress themselves.
