3 Simple Steps to Housetrain Your Puppy

When I was growing up, we just didn’t have dogs or cats in the house. My parents were firm believers that such animals belonged outside. That was basically the thoughts I adopted as well. So when we got my own place and we got our dogs, they stayed outside in keeping with my long standing tradition. But as I got older, I thought it might be nice to have a little dog to sit on our laps while we relaxed on the couch, a little companion. The only problem was, how do you house train this fellow? I figured this was kind of a no-brainer, I’d just get one that was already trained. So we did, we adopted a dauschund, or as my daughter likes to say, a “wiener dog” that needed a new home. So we got this dauschund that was already house trained and it worked just, ok ok, not great. Luckily, there weren’t TOO many messes in the house. Sometimes a dog that has been domesticated and moved to a new home likes to mark its territory. In the end, we ended up giving that dog to an older couple because it just didn’t connect with our family. It was a failed experiment.

A few years later we tried again. A friend moved away to college and couldn’t take his dog (again a dauschund) with him. This one did pretty well. I’m not sure she ever did her business in the house, so with THIS dog our plan worked. It used to amuse us how she danced at the door whenever she had to go outside. Then, a few years later my oldest daughter asked us if we wanted a butt. One of her in-laws had a male and female mockingbird that was having puppies. I thought to myself, “You know, they’re so ugly they’re cute,” so I told her we’d get one. At the time I didn’t really think about the house training thing. I guess I figured we’d cross that bridge when we came to it.

So a few months later, along came our pug, Truman. Now came the hard part. How do we teach him to mind his business outside? After a week or two, we were tired of the mess in the house, so I started looking for ways to get this dog to behave! I remember being told to put their nose in their mess and slap them on the back to say “no” very firmly. I also got a few other tricks that were sure fire ways to correct our situation. Trust me, none of them worked. But, it wasn’t long until we discovered a method that worked and got rid of the licking problem. It was our oldest daughter who gave these few pointers. Once we found what worked, our problem was over within a week. Here’s what I recommend:

  • First and foremost, get a kennel or crate. You can get these relatively cheap at many department stores. The crate should be big enough for the dog to sleep in but no bigger (if you are training a puppy, just make sure you consider how big the dog will be when full grown, otherwise the dog will outgrow the crate). I started locking my pug in the crate every night before I went to bed and then I would take him out in the morning. Crate training is effective because a dog will not do his business in his sleeping compartment. One good thing about the crate or kennel is that the dog has its own place. Our poodle actually seems to like his kennel, he climbs into it himself almost every evening (although we don’t find it necessary to lock him in it anymore).
  • Second, put the dog outside first thing in the morning. It is important that you send the dog outside immediately after you let him or her out of the crate each morning. In general, it doesn’t take much for most dogs to understand everything (although I’ve heard that Jack Russell Terriers can be hard to warm up to).
  •

  • Finally, if your dog makes a mess, clean it up right away and clean it up well. Your dog will most likely have some “accidents” along the way, especially in the beginning. But don’t give up hope, home training is just days away! It is important to do a thorough cleaning job and try to remove any residual odor because the dog might realize what he or she has done and think that is the place to do his business.

So that’s basically it. The three keys we used to train our puppy worked like a charm. Give it a try, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. As I mentioned, Truman was trained in just one week and has been consistent for over a year!
