Bearded Dragon Baby – Top Tips to Take Care of Your Baby Beaded Dragon
If you have decided to buy or breed bearded dragons, and you need to care for a baby bearded dragon, there are some general rules to follow so that they are safe, healthy and develop naturally into smashing adult pet dragons.
The bearded dragon baby, as well as babies of any type, will need extra care, especially in the areas of health and nutrition, because they are more exposed than minors and adults. Bearded dragon eggs will sometimes hatch over a period of 1 to 3 days.
The baby will use an egg tooth to cut open the egg to free itself from the egg. After almost all of the eggs have hatched, there might be some dragons that couldn’t hatch. If this is the case, you may need to carefully open the eggs yourself with 2 cuticle scissors, but be very careful not to injure the baby. Just cut a small slit in the head of the egg allowing the baby to unharm itself. Leave the egg sac intact if this is still covering the baby, as it will release when ready.
To feed a baby bearded dragon, be careful not to go too far. Overfeeding can put undue pressure on the babies’ nerves, causing paralysis and possible death. They will need a lot of food, but it is essential to try this in frequent small doses versus larger meals. The best food for babies would be small crickets, mealworms or waxworms.
Insects must be gutted and coated with additional vitamin powder a few times a week, before feeding the dragons, but every day you must coat the insects with calcium powder. Every second or third day, slowly introduce your baby bearded dragon to vegetables, thinly chopped or shredded and in small amounts.
With young bearded dragons, versus your baby bearded dragon, there should be more plants and fewer insects introduced into the diet.
At this time they deserve to be offered plants every day instead of every other day. Then when they reach about 9 months, insects only need to be fed to your dragons, two or three times per week. The insects must still be small enough for the juveniles to handle. At this time, calcium supplements can be reduced to every 2 or so days, and any vitamin supplements can be reduced to just once weekly.
If these things are done with care and consideration for the continued health and expansion of your baby bearded dragon, there shouldn’t be any reason for any problems. Your baby dragon should grow into a fine adult, and then live for about ten years or longer as a valued member of your people.
