Chicken Behavior In The Wild And In Captivity

A chicken exists in a herd with a very rigid hierarchy much like a wolf pack (although theirs is not quite as brutal or predatory). This hierarchy is called the “pecking” order. Because often the more dominant roosters and hens will peck other chickens to assert themselves.

The day of chicken is quite defined. Wake up at sunrise, eat, then go to bed at sunset. Since they only eat when the sun is out, this means they eat much less during the winter months. This is why chickens lay fewer eggs during the cold months. Because they do not eat as much as they usually do, contrary to the belief that they less eggs because it is cold (although this also has a slightly negative effect).

Taste and smell of chickens are both not very good. This is sometimes a problem because they are not sure what they are eating and sometimes they are digesting poisonous food. Although for the most part they will not eat things that could be harmful to there health.

Their main sense is their hearing and there sense of touch. In their legs and skin they have certain sensors that can sense vibrations.

This is a very important feeling to guard against predators. If you’ve ever walked near a chicken coop in the middle of the night, then you know what I mean. The rooster will let out a warning cry and sometimes the hens will panic.

Chickens enjoy sleeping or “laying” on higher ground. This is so that predators cannot get them in the wild. A chicken that is higher in the beak will get a higher or more comfortable perch. Often the smaller or weaker chickens will go to bed first to reserve a place in the roost, but more often than not, they will be chased away by their stronger brothers. Domesticated chickens do not like to be more than 50 meters from their coop. This is because they can see larger objects only 50 meters away.

Chickens can handle colder weather than hot weather because they can’t sweat. Instead they cool down by shivering there beaks in cold water or flapping there wings to air out there feathers.

The sounds of chickens are very important. Roosters crow to both warn the flock of potential danger and also to assert dominance over the other chickens. Roosters actually have several types of warning crows to describe where an attacker might come from such as from the ground or air. A hen emits special sounds to lead chicks to food and also to cluck when they are happy. They also make happy sounds after they have laid an egg. So if you’ve ever wondered if your flock is happy, just listen and they’ll tell you. Chicks also chirp until they are 3 or 4 months old. They chirp if they are lost or uncomfortable or just chatting with other chicks.
