Baby Sleep Problems – Getting Baby to Sleep Through the Night

It is a very common problem when babies have difficulty falling asleep and sleeping through the night. Hopefully, this article will help new parents find a solution to this serious problem that affects entire families.

As a mother of three lovely children (one of whom is still a toddler), I know how difficult it is for new parents to deal with sleep issues. All my children, as babies, had a hard time falling asleep and sleeping through the night. After many sleepless nights my husband and I were depressed, exhausted and had constant sleep deprivation. Babies of our friends have already slept through the night, but not my first born daughter. Trying to find a solution I read many books, looking for answers. I found many tried and tested attitudes and time-tested techniques that worked well with my babies. Here are some of them:

  • You should not force a baby to sleep. Sleeping should be a pleasant state to enter and safe enough to stay in. The parent’s goal should be to help baby develop a healthy attitude toward sleep.
  • Try to avoid advice that recommends letting your baby “cry it out”, especially in the first six months. It can harm developing a sense of trust between baby and parent.
  • Stay flexible, as no technique works all the time for all babies. If specific techniques don’t work for your family, skip them. Every baby has a different nighttime temperament. What doesn’t work one week might work the next. That’s why it’s so important to follow your heart. Eventually you will find the best solution.
  • Breastfed babies need to eat more often than bottle-fed babies, usually every two to three hours. This prevents them from sleeping smoothly through the night until they are between three and seven months old.

You can try the following sleep improvements that have worked for my children:

  1. Maintain the right bedroom temperature and humidity. Best is around 69 F and 50% humidity. Dry air can cause a stuffy nose and lead to increased incidences of allergies among babies. All this can disturb a baby’s sleep.
  2. When you put a baby to sleep, create darkness in the bedroom. Try not to turn on lights or the TV while you feed her.
  3. It is very important to recreate a cozy, comfortable environment similar to that in the womb where a baby spent nine months. So, if your baby seems to be uncomfortable in the crib, try using a bassinet, bassinet or stroller to get a more snug fit. Swaddling or wrapping your baby can make him feel more comfortable, secure and prevent jerky movements that can wake him up. It also helps calm some colicky babies.
  4. Try rocking your baby to sleep in a rocking chair. Walking with a baby and massaging or patting her back while singing lullabies can be very soothing.
  5. Sometimes sleeping without background noise can be difficult, because during nine months babies get used to mother’s womb sounds. So help your baby fall asleep by turning on a fan, air conditioner, vacuum cleaner, or a musical cell phone that mimics womb sounds like a white noise machine.
  6. Swaddling can be helpful, especially with high-care babies. A monotonous movement can be more sleepy than a familiar routine.
  7. Another good alternative is to drive in the car until baby falls asleep. Cool night air and constant movements help baby calm down.
  8. For some babies it is helpful to put them in a sling or carrier and carry them around the house. Rocking will help your baby calm down.
  9. It is very important to create consistent bedtime routines. With familiar rituals babies fall asleep more easily and sleep longer. For example, bedtime rituals of a warm bath, massaging, rocking, eating, singing, etc. can teach him anticipation and help him fall asleep.

Be aware of medical causes of insomnia. If you try all these techniques and nothing works for you, be aware of different medical conditions that can interfere with sleep, such as Gastro-Esophageal Reflux (GER), breathing problems or various allergies. Discuss this with your pediatrician to find a proper solution. In conclusion, all of the above techniques will not only help your baby sleep, but will also create a healthy, positive attitude toward sleep that lasts a lifetime. The baby will learn that sleep is a pleasant state to enter and a safe state to remain. The right sleeping habits will make not only the baby happy but also the parents.
