Starting a Home Day Care – 8 Things Parents of Infants Look For
If you choose to accept babies into your home daycare, what would prospective parents expect to see in your home?
Baby proofing is the number 1 item on every parent’s list. Is your home day care proof?
(1) Are all cleaning products locked? They should either be moved to a tall cabinet or kept locked up so little hands can’t open the cabinet and get something harmful in.
(2) Are pets confined? No matter how much you insist that your dog is absolutely wonderful and wouldn’t harm a fly, many parents will not be convinced, and may look elsewhere for service. Ideally, your cat or dog should be out of sight, with a door between the day space and the pet. Gates are fine, but remember that little hands could poke a finger through the mesh, and an inquisitive dog may see that as an invitation to play. You also have to consider that more and more children in today’s world have pet allergies.
(3) Do you have a good stock of the little baby proofers you can get at the local megastore or hardware store? Are they all in one piece and used correctly?
(4) Are the toys you have age appropriate for babies? Do they have removable pieces that a baby could choke on? Conversely, are there broken pieces that create sharp edges that could cut a baby?
(5) Some parents will actually get down on their knees and look around. You should do this and see if you notice problems that are not evident at normal adult heights. Check especially for easily lost items such as marbles, coins, nails, pins or even larger items such as pillows and blankets. Are there long lamp cords that could trip over or choke?
(6) Children require naps. Do you practice the “back to sleep” method to prevent SIDS? If a parent visits during the day and sees a baby sleeping on their tummy or on their side, chances are they will move on to their next potential day care provider.
(7) Do you have adequate security procedures that will ensure that only authorized people will be able to pick up a baby from your nursery? Perhaps this kind of security could take the form of a login and logout procedure.
(8) Do you have a process by which you can ensure that all your little charges receive their required immunizations? What about a well-defined sickness policy? Babies are highly susceptible to communicable diseases, and a well-defined and properly followed sickness policy will ensure that only good children attend your daycare, thereby protecting all other children.
Running a home daycare is both a noble calling and a rewarding one. The above 8 steps to a secure environment are a good start. If you are also a parent, you will be able to add to this list and have a wonderful and popular home care.
