The Herxheimer Reaction

So, in the last few days I was surprisingly reminded of how much I can feel. In fact, I have made significant progress over the past two months since I had my mercury amalgams removed. I was on the road to recovery and enjoying the benefits. I could do activities that were once too much for me to even think about. That was until today! Boy what a rude awakening. Last night, I fell asleep with a headache. I could hardly think or do anything. I was watching a movie, not really watching, like it was mesmerizing. I couldn’t function. My head hurt and I was extremely tired. I fell asleep right when I went to bed that night. During the night, I woke up about 5 or 6 times to use the bathroom. Every time my head hurt, I was dizzy, and dry. I probably drank 1/4 of a gallon just in the night. I had a cotton mouth like you couldn’t believe. I felt like my heart was beating out of my chest. Just walking to the bathroom made me anxious. Every time I awoke I found myself covered in sweat with a muffled roar of nausea. Several times I swear I was on the verge of blowing bits. I slipped in and out of my weird sleep state every 2 hours or so. It was terrible. I had the craziest dreams/nightmares, and not just one, but several. It was just weird. The next morning I woke up with a huge headache and dizzy feeling. I did my daily routine and started eating breakfast. Halfway through I felt nauseous and stopped eating. I just felt sick. I went to work. When I walked in, I was breathing like I had just run a marathon. During the morning I peed almost 6 times. I didn’t do any work. It was hell on earth again. Back to my old ways.

I started thinking “what could have caused such a sudden onset of such a bad feeling?” Then it dawned on me. I just started a regiment of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and grapefruit seed extract (GSE) 3 days earlier to improve my skin and get rid of some Candida that I let take over while relaxing on my low carb. diet (I do love potatoes). “Duhh…”, I thought. I had a herxheimer reaction, death or herx. And was it bad. I haven’t had one in a long time, so I guess it was about due. I started taking way too much MSM (0 grams per day to 2 grams per day). I didn’t even think to go by degrees. I was a little cocky, I guess. Anyway, I’m writing this to share die-off effects and what symptoms they produce, so you know what to expect as you introduce new natural supplements into your daily regimen.

The herxheimer reaction is the release of endotoxins after a large number of bacterial, fungal or parasitic organisms die. During herx. the amount of endotoxins released far exceeds the bodies detoxification capabilities thus producing “fever, chills, rigors, hypotension, headache, tachycardia, hyperventilation, vasodilation with flushing, myalgia (muscle pain), and worsening of skin lesions.” This sounds so familiar, especially the tachycardia that really freaked me out. My heart was probably at 120 BPM while sleeping!

When you start experiencing herxon. reaction you should start a detoxification protocol immediately. In fact, if you plan correctly, you may be able to eliminate the herx completely. reaction of your healing process. If you start detoxing before adding a new supplement, it could cause a greater number of pathogens to die off than may be safe from herx. reaction If you gradually build up the dosage of your new supplement, you can also be safe from herx. Personally, I feel that feeling the herx. it’s sometimes good that it reminds you that the new supplement actually does what it’s supposed to. It is a blessing in disguise.

You can expect a herxon. Last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. No more than 2 weeks should be felt, however in some extreme cases this can happen. I’ve only had a few last over 3 days. Usually when you start to feel a die-off reaction, you should decrease the dose to a lower amount until the symptoms are more manageable. Once the symptoms start to clear you can then up-the-anti and take more of the supplement, finally reaching your target dose.

A good way to help your body get rid of the endotoxins is sweat, water and vitamin c. Make sure you drink about a gallon of water a day. Take a detox bath at night before going to bed. This bath includes 2 cups of Epsom salt and 1 cup of baking soda. You can add some lemon or lavender if you feel the need for a little aromatherapy (always helps). Do not make it too hot as this will add more burden to your body. Soak in this solution for 30 minutes. When you go out, drink plenty of fluids and go to bed immediately. Most of the time you will be so tired that bed will seem like a stretch to get to. Also, make sure you take plenty of vitamin c and antioxidants throughout the day. Taking 1 gram of vitamin C every few hours is a good idea. This will help your liver get rid of toxins. Don’t forget to take your daily dose of thistle to help your natural biological filters. Remember to eat healthy and avoid sugars and caffeine. Get plenty of fresh natural air. Take a walk; try to keep your mind off the symptoms. Thinking about it only makes it worse. I would not suggest any painkillers or OTC meds during herx. These just clog up your natural detoxes and make things worse.

All in all, a herx reaction can be very painful and discouraging, especially if it appears out of nowhere like my last one did. It can make you feel really bad for several days and do numbers on your emotions and mental progress. Remember though it is only temporary and there is light at the end of the tunnel. When you get there, the bluest of blue skies will be revealed. You will feel clearer and pain free. It’s a pleasant surprise. Your energy will improve, your brain fog will decrease, and your overall sense of well-being will greatly improve.
