United States Marine Corps Boot Camp – What is the Crucible?
In the United States Marine Corps boot camp, you would have to undergo a 13-week intense training. After the third phase comes the crucible and this is the stage of “make or break” for the recruits. What exactly is crucible? It is the final test in the recruit training and it serves as the conclusion of all the skills and knowledge you have acquired over the course of the whole training. The crucible is designed to emphasize how important teamwork is in overcoming adversities. The majority of the tasks are almost impossible without teamwork. You either fail or succeed as a whole, it doesn’t matter if 2 or 3 members have done a great job.
In the crucible, you would have to undergo a 54-hour arduous field training exercise which demands the application of everything a recruit has learned until that specific point in the United States Marine Corps boot camp. It will include 48 miles of marching and it will stimulate the usual combat situations that are accompanied by strenuous testing, hardship without having enough food and sleep. You would be given 3 MREs and 4 to 8 hours of sleep through the entire phase. You will be broken into squad-sized teams, smaller if necessary and then you will be placed under the responsibility of one drill instructor. If you are a West Coast recruit, you will return to Edson Range for the crucible. Parris Island recruits on the other hand will do it in the abandoned Page Airfield on the south end of the depot.
The United States Marine Corps boot camp is known to produce Marines that are both physically and mentally tough so expect a lot of challenges that would ask you to be strong on both aspects. Expect a lot of obstacle courses, night-assault courses, land navigation courses, individual rushes up steep hills, large-scale martial arts challenges, and countless patrols to and from each of these.
