Cockatiels Are Not For Everyone – Here’s Why

1. Birds also need physical stimulation.

Some people buy birds because, in their eyes, they are easier to care for than a cat or a dog. The dog needs to go outside and get lots of exercise, the cat needs its space and birds just sit in a cage, right?

Wrong! Birds normally fly, that’s how they live in the wild. And the cockatiel, even though he is a small bird, will need a lot of exercise. That means he needs a spacious cage and some time outside the cage every day. This means that you will have to have some patience while he moves around the room and please leave the windows and the doors closed while he is busy doing this. The bird must be supervised at all times while he is enjoying his exercise, as he could fall behind furniture and injure himself.

2. Your ‘tielo also has emotional needs.

Cockatiels are social birds, they live in a flock and tend not to do so well alone. If you are planning to get one bird, be aware that cockatiels have the emotional intelligence of a 2-year-old human – that means he is. miserable!

You will need to spend at least two hours a day with your pet. That doesn’t mean you have to hang out with him for two hours, but at least be close to him during that time, he’ll try to interact with you and communicate his needs to you. You can listen to music, or read aloud to him or just talk to him. The bird will love to sit on you and watch you do your chores or just chill.

If you’re a busy person who gets home late from work, eats on the run while watching the latest on Netflix and then goes to bed, then you’re going to have a really depressed cockatiel, with behavior problems and eventually health problems.

3. They tend to live long.

If cared for carefully, cockatiels can live up to 14 years. That’s a long time. Consider that the cockatiel will really bond with you and have trouble adjusting to a new environment and a new person. If you can’t commit to caring for a bird for at least 7-10 years, just don’t buy it. Buy a nice, small mouse.

4. They do have behavioral problems.

Cockatoos like to sing and vocalize, will try to communicate with the birds outside and like any other bird, will be particularly noisy in the morning and evening. But I had my Chico for 4 years and my neighbors didn’t suspect that I had a bird in my house.

But if they aren’t stimulated enough or don’t have a routine, you might find yourself with a screaming bird. The bored cockatiel who is not getting the attention he needs will try to get it by being really loud. And if you don’t react correctly, this behavior will become stronger and will be really hard to unlearn.

So, if you like your peace and quiet, get a cat. If you don’t have the patience or time to stimulate your bird, get a fish. It’s better for everyone.

5. They need a special vet.

Caring for cockatiels is an easy job, but you will have to keep a close eye on his appetite, his water intake and make sure he has a variety of foods in his diet. Cockatiels are birds of prey so they will try to hide the fact that they are sick until they can’t do it any longer. You will need to become an expert on your bird’s behavior by looking closely at his patterns as well as his droppings, as they can tell a lot about the health of your birds.

If he gets sick, you’ll need to find a doctor who has some experience treating exotic pets, while most vets specialize in treating dogs and cats.

6. They are fragile birds.

When it comes to the environment, cockatiels are really sensitive. They enjoy a routine – turn on/off at specific times, they enjoy consistency and they don’t really like change. In fact, they are scared through it. So they need someone who can maintain order and consistency for long periods of time.

They are also delicate birds, they sometimes have night terrors and will need your immediate attention, otherwise they could injure themselves.

They are not suitable for small children. They are beautiful, sometimes majestic and very friendly – a perfect destination for children – but they are carefully handled, so they are more suitable with older children. So keep that in mind when buying one.

If you can manage all of the above, you should know that cockatiels are great companions, they are kind and curious and sometimes empathetic, really nice to watch and can entertain you and your guests with beautiful songs and vocalizations. If cared for carefully, your bird will become your best friend.

Good luck!
