The Fruitcake

Act I

In the Hospital

[l993]

This is Lee Walters’ “hospital” room. the room [and, by observation the ward] is big, and I should add noisy -. I can’t say much about the hospital equipment. Some of the teams look like pipes hanging everywhere, not sure where they are going and could carelessly. A copy of the book “Nowhere” lies on the table next to his bed. Lee is waiting to go home after surviving a stroke and heart attack; he had some complications with his surgery, but all seems well now; the doctor explained to him that he actually had a second heart attack, the first was two weeks before his second, and he didn’t know it, unimportant he assured him, compared to this most recent one, the most important, that it is, in which he arrived at the hospital in time.

He has been in the hospital for three weeks now, with bypass surgery, and had a stroke on the operating table, but again I stress, he passed all these tests. You got it: –he gets bored, –now, for recovery, it has its own little miracles planted throughout the week. We’ll get to that in a moment. He wants the doctors to release him this morning. But only for a minute, against the better judgment of the doctor, that is.

Now you see, when the curtain goes up, Lee Walters is trying to get comfortable in his bed, stumbling with the pillows behind his back and head a little. And Miss Fremont [let’s just refer to her as “Eva” make life easy] -standing in the doorway, shaking his head [thinking, what a dumb clucks, Lee is; we’ll get to Lee also in a moment] “Some bug in your bed, Lee?” she says He leans hard against the bed, boredom on his face, a sound coming out of his mouth, more like a hiss, I don’t think he appreciated the remark, but then he gets acclimated to them, or he should be by now. This situation does not seem to amuse anyone, that is her comments, and his location; he sinks down into his bed —

No Answer

Eve. Lee!

Still no answer

Lee, relax, it’s not good for you to use so much effort [remarks Eva again]

However, there is still silence from Lee

Okay –(upset)–it’s your show, I could care less [says Eva].

Lee is a thirty-five year old male. He is a Mail Carrier who earns $35,000 dollars a year. He doesn’t have a beard but he keeps rubbing his face like he’s having a nervous impulse reaction. He is a hyper person by nature. His mouth is slightly open, ready to say something, or he seems unable to breathe properly through his nose [one or the other]. Either way, it doesn’t help his already troubled state of being in the hospital for so long—twenty one days. He has finally gotten comfortable and raises his head to eye level with his fiancé [a light pause], focusing his attention on her face now. She seems a bit startled now that she has his attention: — lost for words one might say.

Lee. Eva! Do you have something worth saying?

No Answer

Eva!

Still no answer

Eva!

Eve [with a tired attitude]. Monkey see, monkey do, isn’t that how it is in our world?

Lee [shaking his head, indignant]. That’s what you say [he sucks in a breath of air] did you come here to point out my flaws, or what?

Eve. You can figure that out for you smart guy, for yourself.

Lee. I sure can [smugly]!

Eve. I tried to find out how you feel and I got your old stupid remarks as usual; you’re snotty, snotty — shit.

Lee. Wow, I thought you were worried if I had a bug in my butt, I mean bed. Really concerned about my well being, as you admit you are part of my boredom, I am so used to your wise remarks.

Eve. For once you are half right, I forgot about the ‘bug’ remark. Okay, you win, now let’s start — start over, you know, from scratch, right?

Lee. Oh boy, what does that mean? what do I expect, another round of trying to fix my pillow so I don’t bother you anymore?

The patient in the other bed gets an ear full

Eve [somberly]. I can’t help it if we annoy each other. We’re so used to making fun of everything — we’ve forgotten how to be serious. But I cried when I heard you had a stroke in the operating room, along with your heart surgery, I really was, ask your brother. You know you’ve been out for three days; –your left side was paralyzed–out [a slight pause]; outside how to have… I don’t want to talk about it. You also had attacks for twelve hours; man oh man you are so lucky…!

Lee. Yes, I know you cried, I remember some of that. Doctor Bash, Bush or Bean Head, I don’t know his name [a pause, he tries to get his breath], well, Dr. Bash came in last night and said I’m doing great — because I got out of this alive. But he added, and I hate to repeat it, but I will be, for a while there, I was “Fruitcake”, for a while that is, a few days. Can you imagine someone calling you ‘…fruitcake?’ after you had a stroke?

Eve [looking straight ahead, thinking]. Well [pause]now that you say it, you were kind of, i mean, you really were kind of a ‘fruitcake’ [Lee looking annoyed at Eva]. I can’t do much about it, either now – but I suppose it would bother me a bit, I think. On the one hand you were a fruitcake, or out of it, you had those convulsions, you know, or what you call those things, you know, makes the body jump… everywhere, whatever they were, it wasn’t good. We all thought you wouldn’t recover, they [the doctors] going to put you in a coma because you’ve had 12 hours of these tantrums; your brother was here, and–and he had a hard time with it as well as your mother, she was here every day, I mean every day, I think she would have died if you had; –I saw some tears in the eyes of your brothers, but you deceived everyone, and recovered after three days. Everyone says you are the miracle of the department. And so maybe you were a fruitcake, for a while, but on the other hand, you’re not anymore.

Lee [his crabbiness showing]. See, you never take my side, even when I’m sick. Well [pause; a moment to think], …and if I get another hit, and stay forever, a fruitcake, will you take care of this fruitcake, or throw it in the trash? maybe even let the fruitcake dry down to nothing!

Eve. That really hurts me that you ask such a question, or is it a statement [?]

Lee. Well?

Eve. You heard me!

Lee isn’t sure what to say, and taking his time he lowers his eyes. He begins to realize that he asked the wrong question, and maybe the right one. And he assumed that the answer would be: ‘Yes, I will leave you.’ Both Eva and Lee are silent; she shakes her head ‘yes’. Rosario the nurse comes in. She looks around, then closes the curtain around him, and leaves Eva standing alone in the doorway.

Eve. May I help, madam nurse? [Lee shakes his head no to indicated to the nurse he does not want her there.]

Nurse Rosario. No thanks, Miss Fremont, I just have a few things to do. [She is taking his pulse and listening to his heart. He eyes her shape up. She has a nice well-formed figure, and her skin looks a bright-olive, she is all of twenty-nine years old. She is about five feet two inches tall, and she speaks slow, but confident.]
