How To Train A Puppy – Basic Training
Learning how to train a puppy can be a very rewarding experience for both the puppy and the owner. So when is the best time to start training a puppy?
The earlier you start training your puppy, the better. But it is good to give him some freedom until he is around 4 to 6 months. I don’t want to say that you should let him run wild in public places because you should always keep him on a collar and leash when outside and to protect him from the dangers of traffic as well as other dangers that he might face. Check the laws of your country as it could be illegal to let him run free and you may find yourself in trouble with the law if you do.
If there are other older dogs in the parks you go to, you will need to be careful as they may think he is encroaching on their territory and you may find yourself having to break up a fight in which your puppy may get hurt. If you puppy is of a large breed and is too friendly to the people he meets, he can hurt a small child or an elderly person if he jumps on them. Keep your eyes on your puppy when he is off lead.
Your fast-growing puppy needs plenty of fresh air and exercise. The exercise will strengthen his bones and the fresh air will develop strong lungs. Taking him to public places from an early age will accustom him to strange people, traffic noises and the general commotion of everyday life. It is best if you can exercise him every day as this will keep him fit and also tire him out so he can sleep. That way he won’t get bored and get into mischief, which is when bad habits and destructive behavior take over. It also helps overcome shyness in your puppy.
When to Start Basic Training
Around 4 to 6 months is a good time to start. You can train older dogs, but it is more difficult. It is better to start with 10 minutes a day. Your puppy will get tired pretty quickly, and if your puppy is tired he won’t learn anything. You should give him regular training sessions at the same time every day. If you dress in the same shoes or jacket every time you go for a session, the puppy will soon learn to associate those items with his training time.
Teaching Your Puppy to Heel
Your puppy must be on a firm fitting collar and lead. Choose the side that is most comfortable for you and hold the lead firmly and walk at a steady pace. While walking, occasionally say the command Heel. Every time you say that, tap your thigh or the side of your leg. Your puppy may withdraw or become distracted, just keep walking and he will get the idea that he has to follow you. If you continue, he will have no choice but to follow you. If he pulls against the lead and tries to run, say ‘Heel’ in a very firm voice. As he obeys and follows, you tap him and say ‘Good Dog’ or ‘Good Boy/Girl’ and he will get the message that
he is praised for doing good.
Teaching Your Puppy to Sit
The time to teach your puppy to sit is when he has learned the ‘heel command’ and is heeling properly. With him walking at your side, stop and pass the lead to your opposite hand, pulling up on the collar, press down on his rear end with your other hand. Say the command ‘Sit’ as you squeeze and praise him when he sits. You will have to repeat this several times for him to get the hang of it. Make sure you praise him every time he sits so he knows he’s done well. Now keep walking and repeat the command several more times in your 10 minute walk. There are other ways to teach the sit command but this is one of the easier basic methods to get results.
Teaching your puppy how to heel and how to sit are two commands that will give your puppy basic training. It is important that your puppy knows at least these two commands for his own safety. You need to be able to control your puppy to make sure he doesn’t get himself into a situation that is likely to cause him harm. I hope you found this information useful in learning how to train a puppy.
