Omega-3 Supplements Improve Eyesight

As if omega-3 supplements didn’t bring enough benefits to the body, new research shows that omega-3 can improve vision and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness. An estimated 25-30 million people worldwide are affected by this degenerative disorder, and experts predict that these numbers will increase as the unhealthy baby boomer generation reaches old age.

Our eyes work just like a camera, and the retina – a sensitive tissue under the surface of the eye – works like the film. This light-sensitive area is responsible for sending visual stimuli to the brain through chemical and electrical processes. Age-related macular degeneration is actually a disease of the retina that causes a breakdown in retinal tissue, causing a loss of central vision. The structure of the retina consists of phospholipids and fatty acids, half of which contain an omega-3 EFA called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It would be impossible to see without DHA; in fact, studies show that babies who have more omega-3 fats in their milk have better vision than babies who don’t.

Knowing this, it only makes sense to take fish oil supplements to fight the effects of AMD and improve vision. A new study in the Archives of Ophthalmology has strong evidence that a daily dose of omega-3 from fish oil supplements can reduce the risk of developing AMD. This long-term study involved the participation of more than 4,500 men and women between the ages of 60 and 80. Between the years 1992 and 1998, they were regularly examined for symptoms of AMD. They were also asked to list the foods they ate regularly. The researchers discovered that participants who consumed high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids through deep-sea fish such as salmon were 39% less likely to develop age-related vision problems. In addition to providing the DHA needed for a healthy retina, researchers have determined that omega-3 fats also reduce AMD by promoting healthy blood vessels and reducing inflammation. These findings and other studies on the benefits of omega-3 EFAs show that we can definitely take control of our long-term health by eating the right foods before old age strikes.

The good news is that it’s easy to prevent AMD through diet. Start by eating at least two portions of deep fatty fish like salmon and mackerel at least twice a week. If you are a vegetarian, you can get omega-3 EFA from non-fish sources such as walnuts and dark green vegetables. Supplement your diet with fish oil supplements, echino oil or flaxseed oil to ensure there are enough omega-3 EFAs in your diet. Avoid or reduce eating foods with trans fats and omega-6 fatty acids as these tend to interfere with the health benefits provided by omega-3 EFAs.
