A Simple Method to Relieve GERD Sufferers – Practice Food Combining
According to an online article I just read, GERD or gastro-esophageal reflux disease (years ago it was simply called heartburn) affects 44% of American adults at least once a month. This statistic seems realistic to me based on the number of hands I see in the air at my lectures when I ask people in the audience to raise their hand if they suffer from GERD, acid reflux or heartburn.
The amount of money spent on prescriptions and worthless drugs to get relief from GERD is staggering. The number of advertisements seen on television for these products is also amazing; this represents a lot of money for the advertising and drug industries.
Common over the counter products include: Tums, Pepto Bismol, and the myriad of other antacids both tablet and liquid, as well as simple enzymes from pineapple (bromelain) and other sources. Popular prescription medications for GERD include: Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Tagamet (I think several of these are so commonly used that they are now over the counter), Zantac and Pepcid.
As with any chronic irritation, ongoing problems with GERD, acid reflux, indigestion or heartburn can lead to serious health problems, including cancer.
A long, long time ago on a planet far far, far away before I went raw I suffered terribly from GERD, which at the time was called heartburn or acid reflux. The pain was sometimes so excruciating that my doctor actually sent me home with an aerosol can of benzocaine, I think it was—maybe it was novocaine? In any case it was a spray can that could be sprayed directly down my throat to cancel it out to relieve the pain. I put the can in the trunk of my car, and decided then and there that I had to do something else, this was definitely the wrong path I was on. I was 44 years old. I never used that can. Instead, I started my raw food journey.
If you suffer from GERD, or acid reflux or heartburn, or if you know someone who suffers from GERD, and others, (especially if they are a SAD* eater) please listen up – because for many people with this problem it’s simple. solution (*Standard American Diet)
DISCLAIMER: I am not a Doctor. I’m sure there are people for whom this solution won’t work. I’m sure there are people who really need the drugs I’ve listed. I speak from personal experience not only as a long-time raw foodist, and this can work for non-raw fooders as well, but also as someone who understands the theories of food combining.

This is simply advice on how to eat your daily food in a way that has helped me, and many hundreds of people have told me that it has helped them.
If you are currently taking medication for GERD please do not stop taking your medication without consulting your Doctor. If you choose, while still taking your prescription medication, to try the dietary advice I’m about to give, that’s entirely up to you-again, I repeat, so there’s no misunderstanding here, it’s always best to consult. with your doctor before making any type of change.
The solution(s) to end GERD, heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion:
Reducing the amount of acid-forming foods eaten helps many but not all GERD sufferers. Eating a balanced, high-variety diet of all or mostly raw foods is an alkalizing diet and that alone can help many people.
The rest of the story is about food combining. If you are not a vegetarian, never plan to be a vegetarian, or know someone who is not a vegetarian and never plans to be a vegetarian, but suffers from GERD, etc., try combining foods. This means no longer eating your meals the way your Mom served them.
Why? Protein and carbohydrate (starch) take very different amounts of time to digest as well as completely different types of enzymes to digest them. So when you eat a steak and a potato at the same time, your digestive tract has a huge conflict. Nothing actually digests properly or well, leading to, you guessed it: GERD, acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion and incomplete digestion possibly including or contributing to what some people call leaky gut syndrome.
The solution for the Standard American Diet eater or the primarily cooked and processed eater (I’ll get to this information for the raw food eater later):
Look at your typical plate of food. What is traditionally on it?
Let’s call it The Big Three of the Dinner Plate:
a. protein such as steak, chicken, hamburger, tuna, etc.
b. starches such as potatoes, rice, chips, pasta, this category includes bread.
c. vegetable like carrots, green beans, asparagus, this includes salad.
When I was growing up, and I think it’s still true in many homes today, all Responsible Mothers in Their Wise Minds served the Big Three of Dinner: meat, vegetables, and starch.
Do you want to feel better? Forget about the way mom served your meal, instead eat this way, let’s call it the Delicious Lunch and Dinner Duet:
Choice One: Steak, chicken, lamb etc with vegetables including salad. NO BREAD, NO POTATO, NO RICE. At a completely different meal separated by at least four hours try this:
Choice Two: Starch such as rice, potato, baked yam or pasta along with vegetables including salad.
No more the Big Three of the Dinner plate, now you consume the Delicious Duet of the lunch and Dinner plate. A few more examples (and yes friend, you will need to learn what protein is and what carbohydrate is so you can do this.)
Note to Raw eaters- you can help your friends and relatives suffering from digestive problems more with this information than with almost any other, once they try it and feel better – well, maybe they might listen to you about something else.
An example of a combined meal to avoid acid reflux:
1. Eggs, bacon, sliced tomato, fruit (No toast, no potato)
2. Vegetable, cheese and or meat omelette, sliced tomato or fruit salad (No bread, no potato)
3. Waffles, or pancakes, fruit salad or sliced tomatoes (No meat, No cheese)
4. Steak/meat (pork, hamburger, chicken, etc.) with a large salad and a non-starchy vegetable such as asparagus, green beans, okra, summer squash, cabbage, etc. (No rice, no potato, no bread)
5. Rice or potato dish, or yam, or pasta, bread and a big salad and any kind of cooked non-starchy vegetable (No meat, no cheese)
6. Pasta with tomato sauce and a big salad, with bread. (No Meat, No Cheese)
To put it another way:
Eat your meat with your vegetables
Eat your starches with your vegetables
But never eat your meat with your starches (think: meat and vegetables, yes, starch and vegetables, yes, meat and starch no.)
Another suggestion: Eat the main protein meal for lunch because it takes the longest for protein to digest then eat the main starch (carbohydrate) meal for dinner; it will help you sleep better later.
Two more tips: try not to dilute your food with liquid. Drink between meals not during. Taking digestive enzymes is helpful too especially taken with heavy meals.
If you eat meat or protein at every meal like many Americans (eggs for breakfast, tuna for lunch, hamburger for dinner), for this approach to work, you’ll have to give up at least one meal a day with high. protein Also, a hamburger at McDonald’s is now a no no. But you could eat the hamburger just plus some vegetables. Or you could eat the bun just plus veggies, you could probably eat the bun and the fries – not advisable, but you could. (These are very graphic examples but should help you remember, this information is important for GERD suffering SAD eaters. Don’t we all know one?)
Raw Fooders food combining approach
I personally don’t know any vegans who suffer from GERD. It became clear that food combining principles are less important when eating completely raw. This is probably due to the many enzymes available or as the body adjusts to everything raw or high raw the relative ease of digesting raw rather than cooked, processed foods. However, it is still a good idea to keep protein and starch separate and most raw foodists try to keep fruits and vegetables separate when practical. Don’t forget if it has a seed it is a fruit, so cucumber, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes etc are all fruits when you come up with things for your meals.
Example of a bad raw food combination:
Eating yams and nuts at the same meal would strain the digestive system and result in incomplete digestion. Eating large amounts of starchy vegetables and nuts, even if this combination does not bother you physically, is probably not good for the body. Also, and most people know this, some foods digest very quickly and should be eaten first then wait 20 minutes, or should only be eaten alone, this applies to all types of melon. Freshly squeezed juices also digest very quickly, it is not a good idea to eat a lot of food, then melon or juice. Eat them first, wait a while before eating again, or eat them alone.
If you are all or high raw food and suffer from a digestive disorder, try mono-meals for a while. This means only one food at each meal. All the apples. Or any salad. Or all nuts. Eating just one food simplifies the body’s job of digesting, assimilating and eliminating and can help ease any digestive discomfort you have. Also try to take digestive enzymes with every meal, especially complex meals.
