Why Boys Don’t Do Ballet
I want to get right to the point with this article and find out why I think so many fathers are so totally opposed to their children taking ballet and where the American prejudice against male dancers comes from. I am not trying to offend anyone with this article, but at the same time I have taken so much flack and encountered so much ignorance as a male dancer myself that what I have to say may irritate some. I hope this will be taken in an open manner, as this is a real problem and I am trying to explain what the real reasons are, at the ground level.
For as long as I can remember, I have heard my friends giggle or make fun of any man wearing pantyhose dancing on stage. In the long days before YouTube and Cable TV, movies could be shown in school as part of a history or civilization class and inevitably touch on art and then at some point show ballet. As soon as the male dancer appeared, there were jokes and jokes. Since I’ve been doing ballet since I was 4 years old, this always struck a real nerve with me, but most of the time no one knew I took ballet, so I sat quietly and listened to snide remarks. . I must say that while this is not the same thing as someone being mocked or teased because of their race, I think I know something about the same feeling because I have always loved ballet and I have never done it. but listen people disrespecting something that I knew was so big and that was a part of me that really hurt in a way that leaves you feeling totally powerless to deal with it.
Much later in life, I finally gained the perspective to look back on my childhood and also hear the comments that are made again and gain some insight into where this prejudice comes from. What follows is my analysis of the prejudice against male dancers.
1) Smooth or graceful movement confused with “girl-like” movement.
Many, many men have never appreciated the value of being able to have a wide range of movement for the body and the ability to move separate parts of it at the same time and smoothly to maintain balance. Virtually every sport anyone has watched on TV since the 1950s features athletes very highly conditioned to move in straight lines as fast or powerfully as possible. Male ballet dancers MUST move in a different way because the goal of a ballet dancer is to maintain balance rather than impart a large amount of energy into a ball or into another person’s body to hit it. A large number confuse this with ballet which makes men move like girls. Aside from that, ballet actually makes men move a lot like someone who practices Tai Chi or Kung Fu or especially Yoga. Add to this the idea that ballet is a pure creative exercise set to music, not something intended to injure or render another person unconscious, and you reach the basis for one of the great misconceptions of ballet as it relates to men. . Interestingly, this is also the reason why many men find ballet extremely challenging to do and gain respect for it later in life if they ever take a class that their daughter might be during a home type event open
2) Boys don’t wear pantyhose
Let’s examine this. When I warned that I might offend some people with this article, this part is exactly what I was referring to. I don’t know how to approach this, so here it is: Every male athlete wears tights or much less. The swimmers? You wear lycra speedos. Wrestlers? Seriously, what is that spandex bodytard thing you’re wearing? The football? Lycra-spandex cut off tights with some extra padding and a cup. Don’t confuse the straps and tank top with the fact that you guys are also wearing a cropped version of tights. And, if guys are doing “girly” things when they dance, what do you call going right behind the back of the Center and putting your hands almost in his crotch before a snap of the ball?
3) My son will be gay if he takes ballet
Now I’m a flaming heterosexual if you ask my wife. I know many gays, but many of the gays I know are sports junkies and have never done ballet. And as body-built as they are by pumping iron all the time, they had as much luck doing ballet as Arnold Schwarzenegger. This really stumps me to be honest and comes up a lot as a reason why dads won’t let their kids take ballet. Are there gay dancers? For sure. Are there gay men in any profession, including sports? Yes, there are, and again, as the football and wrestling examples above show, if I were a gay man, I would do those sports because then I would be in direct physical contact with other sports guys instead of ballet where 99.99 % of the time you dance with GIRLS! More specifically, you are partners with girls that involve holding them in all kinds of very difficult positions and getting sweat all over them that no gay man wants because most gay men don’t want close contact with women. Honestly, I have to say that there is no basis for this prejudice as there is no basis for any racial prejudice and the answer to any prejudice is education which does not argue the prejudice itself because it is founded on ignorance or pure stupidity. By being brutally honest fathers who dominate their children too much, they run a far greater risk of their boys becoming homosexual than any art form including ballet could ever pose.
Now many children – boys and girls – do not like ballet and do not take ballet classes and that is fine, no activity or sport or art is for everyone. I just hope to remove the premises check for all those who hold this ignorant prejudice against boys who take ballet, because for those who want it, ballet can be a life-long benefit that improves mental and physical health, stimulates the academy. performance, almost guarantees a college scholarship for any half-way capable male dancer, and fosters lifelong creativity and imagination. This is not something to be opposed to.
