So You Think You Need To Rent A Media Studio?

Are you a filmmaker, band, special effects producer, virtual reality game designer, vlogger or rapper and looking to rent a stage, green screen or recording studio for your project. Many creative and artistic people know what they want their finished product to look like and plan to go to a media studio to make it perfect. What you need to determine is what you need, what it will cost and how you can get help with your project. Having seen what people go through in their searches, I know first hand how frustrating it can be. Although he works at Sun Studios of Arizona and focuses on that facility in this article, it is important to do your research and choose the place that works best for you. Because in the end, making your project all that it can be, is the most important reason to choose a great studio.

As many people learn – usually the hard way! – can be frustrating unless you do your research on the facility you want to use. Sun Studios of Arizona in Tempe can provide information that you can use in your search to find the perfect media facility. We always want to make sure you have everything you need, and people who know what they’re doing to help. We may or may not be your final choice, but we want to make sure the choice is informed.

Here is information about the different work areas in our facility, to give you a good idea of what to expect:

Rent a sound stage

In many facilities, when you rent a soundstage, you will be asked to pay an hourly rate, and then they will give you a menu of “items a la carte” that you need for your production or event. Options may include a studio manager, lights, sound, equipment, tripods, monitors, teleprompters, consumables, electricity and wifi. In the end, after choosing all the options, it can cost anywhere up to $3,000 per day to use that soundstage.

We like to make things easy for our customers. Our price is a fixed rate, both half day and full day rate. Our Sound Stage 1 at Sun Studios of Arizona is 2,500 square feet of acoustically treated space, with weatherproof climate control, two 200 amp 3 phase power stations, a 16′ light grid and most of the equipment that you need included in a fixed rate. It’s a good size space that includes many things that other studios charge extra for, including a stage manager to help you with every aspect of your project.

Do you need a Green Screen rental?

Green screens are a staple of the digital media industry and are in high demand. They allow the production to record in a stable environment, then add a separately filmed background with ease in post-production – basically, taking your subject out of the real world, and putting them on a digital background. Music video channels and video blogs (vlogs) particularly use green screens for many of their projects.

Sound stages with green screens can be expensive, over and above a regular sound stage, because instead of flat walls, the green screen requires a variety of special lighting to enhance the luminance. The prices in many studios, again, are piecemeal, with an hourly rate followed by options, including that special lighting (skylights, filters, effects panels and much more), which add additional costs and can bring your screen green projected total rent up to. $3,000 or more for a day of shooting.

Here at Sun Studios of Arizona, we prefer to offer a flat rate. The cost of a green screen soundstage includes everything you need to make your production perfect, including a studio director and most of the expenses mentioned above in Soundstage 1. We also have an additional option for using with our green screen stage: a 20. cam motion tracking capture system. This system allows the capture of 3D models of the contours of the actors and the movements frame by frame, which can be animated in post (King Kong and Lord of the Rings are good examples of this being used). Motion capture is also used in the creation of video game avatars.

Rent an Audio Recording Studio

Always check to see what equipment is available for your specific needs before committing to a studio. You want to make sure that your recording needs, whether it’s audio, voice over, ADR and/or scoring are met. Some items usually used for recording, may not be included in the initial price in some studios: Mixing room, drum room, sound room of instruments / voice / foley, mixers, microphones, equalizers, foley box and more. Prices for studios are set as an hourly rate and do not usually include a sound engineer except as an option (more money). If you want to make sure you get your money’s worth, it pays to have a professional sound engineer help you make your project sound perfect.

At Sun Studios of Arizona, our audio recording studio is top of the line, with a list of equipment too long to list in the limited space of this article. Your project will be in good hands with our experienced and professional sound engineer included in our fees. The recording studio is priced by the hour, with discounted half-day and full-day rates available. And, again, there are no hidden costs – it’s all included, meeting your audio recording needs under one roof.

Auditorium / theater rental

Many digital media projects may require a pre-screening for the crew, or even a premiere for the cast/crew and fans. Many studios do not usually have a theater, and the media crew may have to “four walls” a commercial theater to show their finished products. Which means that you rent a theater and make sure that its system can accommodate your media (Video, DVD, BluRay, Computer, Film etc.). The costs for four walls can be very high, depending on the day of the week you want to screen your project.

But why not create your project and the screen in the same building? You can do exactly that at Sun Studios of Arizona. Our auditorium/theatre can accommodate over 150 people with tiered seating in comfortable cushioned seats, a 24-foot screen and 5.2 digital surround sound. We also have a very cool retro marker that can display the name of your project on it, all lit up to give you a premiere worth talking about. The price always includes a technician to take care of the projection and sound, and it is very reasonable.

Final thoughts

Renting a studio space can be intimidating, but it’s less so if you know exactly what you want and budget for it. Don’t be fooled by ads that show ridiculously low hourly rates before you check to see exactly what you’re getting. Usually, as the old saying goes – you get what you pay for. Make sure you have not only the space you want, but the equipment you need, the staff to help you and all the support you’ll appreciate in the long run. Find a space that you can call home, because creating a project is an exercise in determination and love, an experience that you want to make sure is perfect. Keeping this in mind when renting a studio space will help make it simpler and a more enjoyable experience from start to finish.
