Depression, Symptoms and Explanation

Depression is actually a type of extreme sadness, feelings of disconnection from life, and even a decreased pleasure in the things you used to love in everyday life. It is not a sign of weakness, everyone goes through depression at some point in life or another. Although the severity and duration of depression can vary according to the situation and the cause of depression.

Unfortunately, severe depression could lead to suicide, identifying the symptoms of a suicidal person or seeing the signs and symptoms in yourself can help save a life. The symptoms shown by a suicidal person are listed below:

  • Always thinking, talking, or writing about death or dying
  • Reckless behavior that could cause injury or death, actions that represent a so-called “Death Wish”
  • Contact their loved ones in person or at a distance, in a way that seems unusual, as they say goodbye
  • Talking about “Wanting out” or that things would be better without the person there.
  • Talking about ending his life, about suicide
  • Signs of Clinical Depression (changes in sleeping or eating habits, sadness) that seem worse.
  • loss of interest in things one loved
  • By saying that things are “hopeless”, or that the individual is worthless, or feels helpless
  • Put the affairs of life in order as if the person expected to die soon
  • A sudden change from being sad and depressed to being happy and calm

If you or someone you know shows any of these symptoms, seek help immediately. You can call any of the following numbers:

  • 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)
  • 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433)
  • 1-800-799-4TTY (1-800-799-4889) (for the deaf)

You can also call 911, a relative or friend or go to a local emergency room. Please remember that life is not hopeless, and things will get better. People are here to help you, you don’t have to do this alone.

Symptoms of depression

Depression can affect everyone differently depending on the person involved and the situation that caused the depression. Below is a list of common signs of depression:

  • Changes in sleeping patterns, Sleeping longer than normal, Insomnia, or waking up earlier than usual
  • Lose interest in activities you used to find enjoyable
  • Changes in appetite, reduced appetite or overeating
  • Loss of concentration, difficulty remembering things or difficulty making decisions
  • Feeling hopeless, helpless, worthless, guilty, sad, anxious, empty or pessimistic
  • Irritable, irritable or restless disposition
  • Physical pain, cramps, headaches or stomach problems that don’t seem to go away
  • General decrease in energy level, feeling tired or tired all the time
  • Crying spells for no apparent reason
  • Suicidal thoughts, feelings, or attempts (See section above on Suicidal Symptoms)

Unfortunately, not everyone experiences the same symptoms for the same reasons. For example, most men suffer symptoms of loss of interest in activities, feel irritated and restless, with physical pain and sleep problems. Women are more likely to eat more, and feel a sense of worthlessness and have a tendency to sleep too much. To complicate matters, the signs and symptoms of depression can vary depending on how old you are. Teenagers for example or more likely to be irritable and angry, and suffer a loss of concentration and may have physical symptoms of pain for no reason. Older adults, however, usually suffer feelings of worthlessness and sadness, along with physical pain. Unfortunately in teenagers and older adults, the signs and symptoms are usually dismissed as just a sign of age and not as signs and symptoms of depression.

Types of depression

There are many forms of depression, each can have a different cause and a different treatment. However, if you are struggling with almost any depression or general feeling of sadness, worthlessness, or a loss of interest in things you love, you may need to visit a doctor. Some types of depression are easily treated and can be cured without medication, but others are more quickly relieved with the help of a doctor.

Major depression

Major Depression is a feeling of excessive sadness, in addition to a decrease in interest and in most cases one of the many symptoms in the list above. The most important thing that separates this type of depression from other forms is that Major Depression is an almost constant state of being for a prolonged period of time. Everyone has days where they feel lonely and don’t want to do anything, but a person who is affected by major depression will feel very down for weeks or months at a time without a real break in the feeling. Other types of depression will have lulls throughout the day where the feelings of depression seem to clear up and you can be generally happy, it may not last very long, but they are here, major depression does not have these calms. If you suffer from Major Depression, I suggest you go see a doctor, in addition to talking to friends about how you feel. I would also suggest that you start exercising more as exercise increases your serotonin levels and helps you get out of many of the things you are feeling.

Mild depression

Mild depression, which is also called Dysthymia, is described as feelings of depression that are not as severe as major depression, but last for years at a time. This constant low level depression has a tendency to impact your overall level of enjoyment in life and can easily be dismissed as just being your outlook on life. The fact is that if you have gone two years, if not more with the symptoms of depression as well as not being able to remember a time when you were happy you are most likely suffering from mild depression. In my own case, I had to be depressed for many years, I just felt that it was how it was, just my state of being. I felt like I had lost a part of myself that I was excited about and that just wasn’t coming back. I needed to have a friend point out that the feeling that was not part of the growth, or just part of the situations that was at that point in my life, but actually a sign of depression. In this case, seeing your doctor can be a wise decision, with some changes in your diet, sleeping habits and fitness level. For me, making sure I got 8 hours of sleep every night, working out at least three times a week for an hour (although I work out more often now), and starting a meditation routine was enough to drag me out. But you should always talk to a doctor, they may have some advice for you according to your current physical condition that could be more useful then exactly what is listed above.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD (which is a cheerful acronym) is a type of depression usually linked to the change of season, from summer to winter, and climates that can have a sad and gloomy climate. The change of season, which usually brings with it darker nights, less sunshine and darker weather tends to cause a feeling of depression in some people. Women seem to be affected more than men by Seasonal Affective Disorder, but everyone can be affected by it from time to time. Fortunately, in most people, Seasonal Affective Disorder can be treated effectively with light therapy. Light therapy, although there can be many different levels, basically involves the exposure of the individual to bright artificial lights in order to cope with depression. This can be done in your home by simply installing light bulbs with a slightly higher wattage. Some people also like to use tanning beds as a Seasonal Affective Disorder management technique. Just don’t do it in the tanning beds anymore. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to ask your doctor’s opinion on the approach to treating Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Postpartum depression

Postpartum Depression is a type of depression that affects new mothers after giving birth. Although some feelings of being overwhelmed are expected immediately after a pregnancy, usually known as the “baby blues” Postpartum Depression is the result of the change in hormones from the level that had been pregnant to the level that are normal. Any depression that occurs up to six months after the birth of a child is considered Postpartum Depression and you should consult a doctor considering the fact that this type of depression is caused by a change in hormones.
