The Dish: Former Dallas Cowboys Fan Tells All

He was a Dallas Cowboys fan.

I really did: I was born in New England and came to the consciousness of the NFL in the mid-1970s. The six-year-old version of me was attached to America’s Team. Maybe it was the shining star. Maybe it was the beautiful cheerleaders. I was a Roger Staubach fan. I freaked out when Jackie Smith dropped the TD pass in the Super Bowl. I wept for the uselessness of Danny White. I hate The Catch. I reveled in the resurgence of Jimmy Johnson, and actually lived in Texas for the three-Super-Bowls-in-four-years. I suffered in the late 90s.

But I’m not rooting for Dallas anymore. Part of that is being a columnist; it becomes increasingly difficult to choose sides. But part of it is the 2006 edition of the team. It’s officially insufferable.

I like Bill Parcells. Obviously, I didn’t like him very much when he was coach of the Giants, but I respect him. When he coached the Patriots, my favorite AFC team, I loved the guy. And when Dallas announced that they had hired him, I thought: finally. But Parcells falters. In every press conference, and on the sideline during every game, you can see his career passing before his eyes. He’s had enough of this group of misfits, and who can blame him?

I’ve devoted enough pixel-dust in this space to Terrell Owens. He is the poster child for what is wrong with American pro sports. But there’s also the idiot kicker, Mike “Earring” Vanderjagt. There’s Drew Bledsoe, who seems like a classy guy, but he’s excruciatingly painful to watch at quarterback. There is an owner whose liposuctioned face resembles the crypto-keeper, and who insists on playing general manager, despite an indisputable record of utter failure in the position. Heck, on this team, terminal grouser Terry Glenn seems like a good guy. They get defensive as if they’re good (they’re not), and argue on the side like a COPS re-run.

This is an insufferable group of people to root for. They dominate the headlines with neck problems (most of which, I agree, revolve around Owens, aka, the Worst Guy in the World). They act like idiots when they win, and like idiots when they lose. The milk curdled. The pudding is gone.

And here’s something I never thought I’d say: I don’t like the Cowboys very much anymore.

How was betting on the World Series? Was he mostly pro-Tigers before the Series? Has that changed as we’ve moved on, and the Cardinals have made it clear they’re not to be taken lightly?

BoDog Bookmakers, BoDog.ws: The Tigers haven’t been as heavily favored as people would think so far in the postseason. With a first-round match-up against the Yankees, Detroit wasn’t getting much respect, and the more they won, the more the public thought the Yankees were a safe bet. Then they faced a very solid Oakland side, where the action came down to melee on both sides, based on who was taking the mound. After a sweep there, bettors began to take notice of Detroit’s talented lineup. In Game 1 of the World Series, we saw most of the money coming to Detroit, which at that point had recorded seven consecutive postseason victories. But the Cardinals made a statement with a 7-2 victory. The last two match-ups saw two aces on the mound: Rogers in Game 2 and Carpenter in Game 3. The action in these cases came in a little heavier based on the star pitchers. The Cards look very comfortable in the postseason, and have had plenty of practice in recent years. It’s pretty clear with a 2-1 lead that they’re making a run to finish this thing on their own turf.

What a crazy, underdog-laden Week 7 in the NFL: By my count, eight dogs posted straight wins. Obviously, this is not unprecedented, but I guess this was a pretty good week for the books? Need to say which games were the worst hits for the betting public?

BDB, BoDog.ws: It’s been a good week for the books with a bunch of big upsets. Tampa Bay’s miraculous win over Philadelphia, Oakland running over an Arizona team that challenged the Bears, and Kansas City not bowing at home to San Diego were three of the biggest hits for the crowd of bet

The NBA opens on October 31st (how macabre!). Here, now: Give us your NBA Finalists, and tell us why.

BDB, BoDog.ws: Cleveland and Phoenix. Cleveland because the NBA needs it; LeBron showed last year that the team has playoff potential. If he can now take the team to the Finals, the NBA can use history to try to return the league to the glory days of Jordan. Phoenix because San Antonio is too boring, and if Detroit moves in the East, at least we don’t have to nap in the NBA Finals again.

What do you think of the NFL’s decision to hold two regular season games per year on international soil? Do you think it will negatively affect the participating teams? Do you think he will do anything in particular at the bet?

BDB, BoDog.ws: It seems odd that the NFL would go international for two regular season games. The pre-season is understandable, but this could definitely put some extra fatigue on the participating teams. Taking a flight to, say, Japan in the middle of the week and returning on Monday morning to the United States to prepare for the following week will not be as easy as a two- to three-hour flight across states. This should not have too much impact on the bet, as long as the games have the same TV coverage. Hey, who are we to question one of the most successful leagues in the world?
