The Top 3 Must-Do’s In Nassau, Bahamas

I first visited Nassau when I was only 15 years old and immediately fell in love with this Caribbean paradise. It’s only a short cruise or flight from the Eastern United States and can be very affordable to get there. Nassau is also wheelchair accessible for the most part and the people of Nassau are always willing to help in any way they can. My incredible first visit at the age of 15 inspired two more trips, one as last year. In these three trips to Nassau, Bahamas, I explored almost everything the island has to offer and discovered the best things to do in Nassau. Here are my top three things to do when in the pristine paradise of the Bahamas:

1) Atlantis Resort

The beautiful Atlantis Resort is located on Paradise Island, Atlantis’ private island that is only a fifteen minute drive from the Nassau cruise port. Finding a wheelchair accessible taxi to go to Atlantis has never been a problem for me as there is always an accessible van and I have never pre-booked this service. Once you arrive at Atlantis, you are in for a truly fantastic experience. There is a large water fountain on the stretch that is composed of golden horses, which exudes elegance immediately. Then make your way into the lobby and begin the Atlantis experience. Atlantis is free to visit, but many areas are strictly for guests staying at the resort. However, you can purchase a day pass that will allow access to the beaches and Aquaventure, Atlantis’ own water park complete with slides, pools and rapids. The day pass is quite expensive and can be up to $135 per adult during high season. While the water park is not very wheelchair friendly, the passes also include access to the aquarium and the Dig, which are all accessible. If this is your first time at Atlantis, then I suggest you go all out and see it all. There is also a large casino with plenty of slot machines and table games that are available to everyone, regardless of whether you are staying at the resort or not. I still spend too much time and money in the casino, probably because they give free cocktails while you play – a definite way to keep me from leaving the casino. Many high-end shops are also in the resort, as well as souvenir shops and eateries. Plan at least a few hours to spend at Atlantis, and longer if you have a day pass. You’ll be planning your next trip to Atlantis before you even leave because it’s that awesome, I guarantee it.

2) The Straw Market

Although navigating the narrow aisles of Mercato di Paglia can be extremely challenging in a wheelchair, I still make sure to visit. You can actually walk there from the cruise port, so it’s always full of tourists, but what makes it special is that it’s also full of locals. The local Bahamian people working in the Straw Market are always in a cheerful mood as they try to sell their goods. Many of them have sold in the Straw Market all their lives. I once met an old lady who had worked there for over sixty years, and she was always smiling as she told me all her life experiences at the market. If you are looking for souvenirs, then Mercato di Paglia has everything you could want: t-shirts, toys and bags to name a few. However, the coolest and most unique items are the handmade straw bags and fans that the vendors make themselves. They can also engrave these (with the straw color of your choice) for free. Everything here is also quite cheap, but always make sure to bargain. I asked how much an item was before and they said $20, but after negotiating I got it for half price. The Straw Market is a unique experience that should not be missed when in Nassau.

3) Mr. Frog

This happens to be one of my favorite restaurants of all time and probably one of my favorite places in the world, period. It is an open-air restaurant, bar and souvenir shop located right on the crystal clear water and a short distance from the cruise port. Mr. Frog is, for lack of a better word, “crunk” at all times. It’s a little more family-friendly during the day, with staff making balloon animals and balloon hats for everyone at your table. After night, it becomes a club. There is a DJ and various contests and games where you can win free shots. The whole environment is very fun and apart from the wide selection of great drinks, they also have good food. The chicken nachos are fantastic and a Bahama Mama (drink) to wash it down with perfection. Mr. Frog is the most fun you can have in paradise!
