Baby Photos: What Milestones To Capture During Your Baby’s First Year?
It goes without saying that life goes by in the blink of an eye. This is especially true when you have children. One minute you’re biting their toes and the next you’re holding back tears as you drop them off at their first day of school.
The first year of your child if it is full can’t miss moments that must be captured, saved, printed, stored, shared, and curated!
I have been a photographer for 13 years and here are my personal tips for capturing the exciting first year!
Maternity: The journey begins!
I have to suggest a maternity photo shoot here because that’s where the journey begins. Hear the heartbeat for the first time, move, kick, and see them for the first time during your first ultrasound (sonogram) appointment.
Some do not feel comfortable taking pictures during their pregnancy, but they trust the photographer. It will make you feel great and look beautiful! It will be great! After all, you are brilliant!
Take photos when you feel the most comfortable, more like their photos around 32 weeks or 7 months.
Newborn: So sleepy and small!
The best time to capture newborn photos would be before 2 weeks. At this stage I am so little and so sleepy! You can take pictures of babies at 4 weeks, but they are more prone to wake up when you pose them and they are also a little bigger.
Before the 2-week mark, since they are very sleepy, you can pose in a variety of ways without disturbing their sleep too much. They can be on their belly, back, side and can be put in something like a basket, a toy box and a car!
At this stage, they could be a little scratched up (keep gloves on them to protect their face), maybe a little jaundice and have a few pimples. Don’t worry! The photographer should correct these defects.
Newborn photos are a must have to remember this little milestone that passes very quickly!
3 or 4 months: Tummy time and head balance!
This is, perhaps, where you will see the most changes during the first year.
They have grown a lot since the newborn photos. They smile more often, maybe have some hair, and probably look like you now. But, they don’t do much besides being on their backs and a few seconds of tummy time. The balance of the head must also be a full force!
The pictures at this point show a great contrast in your baby’s physical changes. You can hold your baby a lot at this stage, since they cannot sit on their own. They will get on the back and maybe a few pictures with them holding their heads up!
6 or 7 months: Lying around laughing and smiling!
This is my FAVORITE STAGE! At this point, they interact and smile some more. They sit, pick things up, bite things, and make the sweetest laugh!
I like to capture the 6-7 month pictures while the baby is on a big bed or a cushy blanket outside. They fit well, but sometimes that head is too big and tiiiiiiimber over. So cute!
At this point, tummy time is no longer torture for them, because they can last a little longer. Oh! And don’t forget to capture a few pictures of them nibbling on their feet while they’re on their backs.
Enjoy the cuteness overload during this stage.
1 year: Standing, moving, and cake smashing!
Here we are! That first year has flown by! This is a stage of movement where they have developed a way to go from point A to point B. Whether by crawling, scooting, rolling, or walking.
Dress them up in their Sunday best, give them lots of hugs and kisses, maybe a little cake, and enjoy the memories of their first birthday!
I hope this helps you plan photos during your baby’s first year!
