Weaning Babies – A Baby Led Approach
Baby-led weaning (sometimes referred to as baby-led weaning) has become a popular approach for weaning babies to solid food.
In basic terms, it means to forget pureed food and let your child eat (appropriate) whole foods. It is undoubtedly the natural way to introduce solids. Although it still remains a recommendation of many childcare professionals and institutions, there is actually no research to support the widespread notion that babies should be weaned first to solids through puree or puree.
The idea that pure solids should be introduced is undoubtedly a hangover from the 1960s, when the recommended age for introducing solids was 3 months. These days, the recommended age for introducing solids is 6 months. By 6 months, most babies have a strong neck, can sit up if supported and have enough fine motor skills to reach and grasp things, including finger food.
They can also start feeding.
Child led weaning
To start weaning your baby, offer your baby a selection of suitable finger foods. Because babies haven’t developed a pincer grip and can only grasp things in their fists, chip-shaped foods or those with a handle (like broccoli spears) are ideal. Let your child decide what to do with his food – if at first all he wants to do is play with it, that’s fine. He can go on to suck his food and later “chew” it by mashing it with his gums.
Make sure you let your baby get his own food and don’t put food in his mouth for him. This is because their ability to manage their food corresponds to their general development. When he is first introduced to solids, he does not have the fine motor skills to pick up small foods that may otherwise present a choking hazard.
Don’t worry about him getting enough food or eating a balanced diet of solids. He will still get all his necessary nutrients and “balance” from breastfeeding – the wonders of breastfeeding! However, you should try to offer a variety of solid foods to keep their interest.
Benefits of baby-led weaning
According to Gil Rapley, deputy program director of UNICEF UK’s Baby Friendly Initiative, weaning babies using a baby-led approach has the following advantages:
- children can join family meals from the start, learning valuable social skills
- children are less likely to refuse foods and be picky eaters
- avoids the common problems of childhood feeding, often caused by children who are confused by the need to chew “second stage” food that has lumps.
My baby won’t poop?
It is very important that children who feed themselves feel straight and are never left unattended. But until a child can chew, he is not able to move the food in the back of his mouth. And until she can chew, she won’t be able to get food to put in her mouth. The way your baby develops naturally makes the risk of suffocation minimal. If a piece of food moves into the bottom of her mouth, she will promptly remove it herself, drooling and coughing. While the gagging reflex may seem uncomfortable, it doesn’t seem to bother babies.
Is baby-led weaning for everyone?
Weaning the baby may not be appropriate if:
- you have a family history of allergies or digestive problems
- your baby was born prematurely
- your child has special needs and has impaired chewing or other fine motor skills
In these cases, you should consult with your pediatrician or GP before starting.
