It’s All About Discipline!
One of my favorite musical instruments is the bagpipe. Many years ago, on a beautiful bright sunny day, my family and I listened to a beautiful version of Amazing Grace played by a bagpiper on the shore as our family left Halifax, Nova Scotia by boat. We continued to listen to Amazing Grace as it bore more than 3 miles from shore.
In the newspapers of the world, on August 22, 2016, it was announced that a 61-year-old bagpiper had died of “hypersensitivity pneumonitis – bagpipe lung”. It was caused by bacteria from the “wet environment” in his pipe that developed into mold and fungi. For the previous seven years he suffered from “shortness of breath, a dry cough”, and could “only walk about 65 feet”.
Disinfecting every part of his bagpipes every day would have prevented his death. It’s all about discipline!
This is a wake-up call to all musicians, bagpipe players, woodwind players, and brass players to clean their instrument properly every day. ” Cleanliness is close to piety.”
It is all involved with discipline. The discipline of preparation. Two of my friends are Firemen. They have their fire equipment ready, so in a few minutes they are ready for a fire. They practice for fires in gear with their air pack to be ready in 90 seconds. When you develop discipline it becomes part of you, a good positive habit.
True discipleship gives you the freedom to do your best and be your best self, allowing you to achieve success. For example: clean up after yourself and keep your workplace organized.
My husband and I went to a local restaurant to grab a quick lunch. The waitress, whom we had never seen before, brought our food and took an extra 5 minutes to bring out the ketchup after our burgers were served. When he finally brought the ketchup, the burger was cold. Soon after, we were rushing to get back to work. The restaurant was almost empty, and we had to look for the waitress to get the bill. This maid won’t last long! He doesn’t have the discipline to work!
In our lives, we need to be disciplined in our mind and in our body to keep free of mental and/or physical engagement.
Like if you brush your teeth twice a day to reduce the bacteria that feed your body and we bathe every day. This is all about our daily discipline.
As an 8-year-old boy, I remember my violin teacher, Mr. William Whitson, teaching me to wash my hands with soap and water before playing my violin. After practice Mr. Whitson taught me to wipe my violin with a clean cotton pad to remove the rosin from all surfaces of the violin, including the strings, fingerboard and bridge. Rosin is a plane of a tree which, in its clean state, rubs on the hairs of the bow of the violin to grip the strings that make them speak. Mr. Whitson also removed the rosin from the wooden part of my bow. I wanted to protect the instrument from damage from sticky rosin. He taught each of his students the discipline of taking care of their instruments. It’s all about discipline.
Many years ago, when I was a student in New York City, I lent my violin to a friend when his instrument was being repaired. When he brought my violin back a week later, it was covered in sticky rosin all over! It took me several hours to clean my violin. My ex-boyfriend had not learned the discipline of taking care of his violin. She should have brought my violin back to me cleaner then when I gave it to her!
For over 30 years, I have taught my string students the discipline of cleaning their instruments.
Part of discipline is to teach our children to wash their hands and dry them after using the bathroom. Harvard Medical School says: “In studies, washing your hands with soap and water for 30 seconds, bacterial counts fall close to 99.9%. They also say: “It takes about 20 seconds to properly dry your hands and you use paper or cloth towels. It’s all about training and discipline!

Below are five suggestions: Try one of them!
1) You have a big stack of papers on your desk. Put documents in order, file informational documents in the right folders, and pay bills according to the due dates on them.
2) Immediately after cooking dinner, put the pots and pans in the sink to soak with soap and hot water. This way you can clean quickly and easily after eating.
3) Eat one scoop of ice cream instead of two.
4) Quit smoking cigarettes for a day.
5) When you run out of some food in your fridge, write down each food you need on a pad of paper. Then take your list to the grocery store.
Remember, discipline follows some goal that you have and do not find excuses for not finishing the task. Don’t procrastinate. To be disciplined you have to take the first step. Don’t just talk. Do it. Take your first step. Then take your second step and follow through until you finish what you started.
It’s all about discipline!
