4 Things You Can Do To Prevent Baby Reflux

Baby reflux can cause discomfort in children, especially during the first year of life, while their stomachs adapt to the post-uterine environment. Your baby has special acids in his stomach that help him break down the milk. However, the mixture of milk and these acids can back up in your esophagus, causing discomfort. If you’ve ever had heartburn, then you’re familiar with the feeling!

While reflux can be messy to deal with and frustrating for parents, it is completely normal and not a sign of illness. In fact, the condition affects almost 40 percent of children, with only 5 percent of those having five or more episodes a day. Often, the reflux is completely temporary and becomes better naturally as the digestive capacity of the child matures. On some rare occasions, however, children may have persistent and severe reflux, which may require special treatment.

What causes baby reflux?

The baby’s stomach is connected to his mouth by the esophagus. Where the esophagus connects to the stomach, there is a muscular valve that opens and closes to allow food in. Since this muscle is still developing in children, it is not always so strong and can not always work well. This will cause milk and acid to back up into the esophagus when your baby has a full stomach.

One reason for this is that the baby’s stomach is so small. In the first days, the baby’s stomach is about the size of a walnut. By week two, their stomachs are only the size of an egg. Over time, however, the children’s stomach grows, and the muscular valve becomes stronger, which allows them to grow out of the condition. More than ninety percent of children grow out of their reflux condition in the first year of life.

How to know if your child has Reflux

You know your baby has acid reflux when they spit up small amounts of milk, usually after eating. This can also be accompanied by hiccups, a cough, or spluttering. This is completely normal and expected in children. If your child is otherwise healthy, you should not worry much about his vomiting, except to have some tissues or a square of muslin on hand.

How to Prevent Reflux

If your child has a fairly normal and mild case of reflux and is otherwise well fed, there are a few simple tips you can implement to relieve some of their symptoms.

1. Feed your baby in an upright position so that the milk flows to his stomach.

2. Keep your baby upright for 20-30 minutes after feeding.

3. Give your child smaller meals with more frequency.

4. If you bottle-feed, be sure to burp your baby every few minutes during feeding, and make sure that the hole in the teat is not too big that allows the milk to come out too quickly.

Some parents also reported fewer problems after raising the head of their baby’s crib or bed. Keeping the baby’s head slightly higher than his feet while sleeping, especially after feeding, can allow gravity to help with his digestion. Always check with your doctor before making any dietary changes with your child to treat his reflux.
