Has Leadership Left the Building?

In a recent Washington Post article, David Rothkopf asks this question. The beginning of his column states the case that America, along with the rest of the world, is without leadership.

“Little by little it becomes clear. This is not just a global economic crisis. It is a global leadership crisis. Obama is still finding his footing, Gordon Brown is on his way out, Hugo Chavez is nuts and the management of Wall Street is larceny. It’s not. There’s someone with decent values, a steady hand on the wheel and at least one big new idea? Where have all the heads gone?”

He goes on to make a pretty compelling, fact-based argument that the leadership has left the building. I think he is doing well for the most part, this crisis has revealed leaders who, in many cases, are not.

There are a few points where I think Rothkopf’s vision doesn’t quite grasp the reality of the situation. This leadership crisis did not just happen in recent years or come with our current economic crisis. It has been built over time, not because, as Rothkopf says, “We have come to expect too much of our business leaders and too little of our politicians,” but because being a leader is relatively easy when you seem to be winning. .

Countless companies have grown, not to serve the customer, but to swallow the competitor. Not to build a sustainable organization, but to achieve revenue goals, no matter the method. We have come to a place where we value outputs, without scrutinizing inputs. Did we really think Enron and Tyco were outliers? The truth is, they were the first warning signs of a common disease, the one where the end justifies the means.

I am not suggesting that business in this country, or any country, are largely corrupt. They suggest that when you consistently achieve your income goals, it’s easy to care less and less about how you got there—until you don’t. Then suddenly everyone comes to town to scrutinize your methods and cries go up for new leadership.

Rothkopf is right when he says: “In the end, a large part of the answer in our search for leadership resides with the American public. We are the ones who will embrace the ideas and empower those who act on them. The ones who will decide what we accept. or we ask how the proper role of government, markets and America in the world.

The part he misses is that it’s not just up to us to ask or accept what our leaders do, it’s up to us to become the leaders. Each of us every day has the opportunity to lead at work, at home, in school and in the community. We lead in that business meeting where we decide to speak against an idea because it contributes to the bottom line, but only at the expense of our values. And at that moment when we avoid the temptation to help a little too much with our child’s school project even thought it is faster and we want our child to get a good grade. Those small spaces are where the leaders of tomorrow will come from.

The question we should all be asking is when those executives take their place at the top of a company, will we pay too much attention to their short-term results? Or we will examine their methods and know that they are building a sustainable and principled organization that will stand out as one of the places that we can point to with pride the next time we find ourselves asking – where are the leaders?
