Six Basic Steps to Eliminate Cat Behavioral Problems

Have you ever felt that your cat has become naughty and not the sweet loving kitty it was? Sometimes, when kittens grow up, they can be sick and mean for the worse. But even for the most annoying cat behavior problems, there is usually always a remedy for this behavior.

Below are six of the most common behavioral problems found in cats and some of the solutions I’d like to share with you that seem to work best for my pets.

1. Clawing your furnishings and carpet. It’s only natural that cats need to file their nails. Their nails never stop growing, and what they actually do when they sharpen their nails is remove the outer layer of the claw. In most cases, I have found that people just declaw a cat that has this type of problem. Personally, I don’t favor this. In my opinion, there is always that chance that even an indoor cat can one day be outside by accident. And in this case, if you remove the nails of your cat, then you can take its primary form of defense.

Maybe before declawing your cat, why not try to get a scratch instead. If you can’t get your cat to use the scratching post, then a solution I found is to try hanging a dirty sock on the post. Use a dirty sock that belongs to someone in the family that your cat likes the most so that the smell is familiar to your pet (you can remove it after a day). You can also sprinkle catnip on the scratch or – this is weird but it works – powdered chicken broth. The idea is to make the cat feel friendly enough to the scratcher to attack.

Meanwhile, it makes your cat’s favorite scratching spots less attractive. For example, sprinkle fresh lemon juice on those areas. Or you can wrap them or cover them with aluminum foil (nails on the chalkboard, anyone?). Do something that cleans that area and also to eradicate any cat smell. If possible, another option would be to close the doors to that area so that those places are inaccessible to the cat.

2. Removal outside the litter box. Could it be your fault or the cat’s fault? I have found that many cats will not use a litter box that is too dirty. If you think this might be the problem, then start changing the litter box about twice as often as you do today. You can also be prompted to clean every place that the cat goes, spraying these areas well with Lysol or a similar disinfectant with a strong strong smell. You can also try to put the litter box in a place more attractive to the cat; the bathroom, for example. If it is not in a too hideous place, you can put the litter box on top of the place that your cat has chosen to go, also to make the point. As a last resort, put the bleach, safely, in those places, and cover the area with aluminum foil.

3. Church people. I have found that cats generally do this because for some reason they are afraid. If this is the case, then you should take into consideration whether it is the fault of the cat or the people around him. For example, if you have a cat that is generally afraid of children, then maybe try to expose the cat to children until it is calmer. Don’t let the child loose around the cat. Or have the baby sit on your lap or next to you while you feed Kitty treats.

Not all cats are afraid. In some cases, they are only meaningful to certain people. The only thing you can do about it is to remove the cat from the situation. When the cat starts to bark or growl, pick her up and take her to the bathroom until your guest is gone. In most cases, it is usually a guest that happens, often someone who owns animals. If it is a member of the family, try cat repellent or lemon juice to keep the cat away, after acclimatization to use it to the other person. If all this fails, you may be forced to have the cat declawed.

4. Caterwauling. Siamese cats do this by nature, and you may not be able to ignore it. But other cats do it because they are hungry, tired, sick, or to let you know that she has done something good. There’s not much you can do about it, unfortunately. If you think it’s a hunger thing, then feed her sooner, and refuse to feed her when she caterwauls. Of course, your cat will not understand what you are doing, but he will almost certainly leave after realizing that it is not doing him any good. If she caterwauls because she is in heat, you have to be fixed. For other caterwauling issues, try to ignore her, and keep her as far away from yourself as possible.

5. Spraying. Normally, male cats do this to mark a territory, and they usually do it when they feel threatened. In most cases, it is done whenever dogs or children threaten, or when other male cats are around. There is little you can do about this other than having your cat neutered. Please do not punish your cat for doing this because the cat will not understand at all.

6. Run outside. Indoor cats tend to be very curious about the outside world. The first thing you should do is to be more careful and not have the door open that allows your cat to escape. But you can also try to get the cat used to the outdoors by taking a cat leash and walking it, or carrying it in your arms when you go outside. When your cat knows what’s out there, she’ll likely be less curious and less anxious the next time she goes outside. And this is especially true if you have ever exposed your cat to snow or wet conditions.
