The Truth About Spare the Rod – Spoil the Child!
Many people believe that the Bible says that “Spare the Rod – Spoil the Child.” This adage persists, perhaps because of its rhythmic cadence and symmetry. Many children were injured as a result. Many parents found it a cruel streak. Many mothers wept when they saw their husband beating their child; yet they did not dare to stop their husband since they believed it was God’s will.
Do you believe that the right way to raise your child is to strike?
Spare the Rod – Spoil the Child – is the common saying. Does God really believe this? Does the Bible really say this?
Here is the truth.. NO.. The Bible does not advocate hitting your child. In fact, according to Jewish tradition, hitting your child is wrong.
First – let’s see what the Bible says..
Sparing your Authority – means that you “hate” your child; if you love him, he will make him desire what is right– Proverbs 13:24
The Bible says that father and mother should hold a position of authority. A child must know that his parents set limits, they will teach him right from wrong. You can be “friends” with your children, just as long as you also maintain your special authoritative place of being a parent.
How was “Spare the Rod” born? In Hebrew, there is a word “shaivet”. The word “shaivet” can mean “authority” or it can mean “scepter” – which is the symbol of royal authority. Someone mistranslated the word “shaivet” to “rod” – since the word “rod” is sometimes used to mean a scepter.
An example of the use of the word “shaivet” to mean “official authority” is found in Genesis 49:10. Jacob blesses his children. When he blesses Judah – he recognizes that Judah is the natural leader of the brothers. It says: “THE SHAIVET will always be held by Judah, and the legislative authority by his descendants.” Here, Shaivet means the Scepter as the symbol of authority. That is why all the major kings of the Jewish people, starting with King David, were of Judean descent.
No. Don’t make your child. It is wrong.
Yes. Maintain your position of authority. So that your child can learn the limits. They can benefit from having a father and mother who are the “king and queen” of their family.
