I couldn’t believe it when I saw him do it. But of course he was there with a mouthful of his own poo, how disgusting! So I did what I always do, I Googled and here is what I found out. The act of eating poop has a technical word; coprophagia and it just means that dogs eat poop and that is also a natural thing.

Why do dogs eat poop

• They don’t have the social considerations that people do, this means they don’t see poop as something bad. For them it’s just another taste sensation.
• Mother dogs eat to keep the den clean of her pups’ waste.
• The cubs can see their mother doing it and so do they too
• Puppies eat it because it has the same texture as the food they eat
• Your dog may not be getting the right vitamins and minerals in his diet and he is eating to get it.
• Some dogs eat poop to cover up something they feel they shouldn’t be doing, this is especially true for the dog that has been poorly disciplined for any pooping mistakes they have made in the past.
• Boredom is a good way for dogs to start playing and then eating their poop
• The dog may have worms and simply feel hungry all the time
• The dog may be looking for attention. Like children, any attention is better than no attention

Now that we have discovered that eating poop can be done for a variety of reasons, it can also indicate a health problem, such as hunger, pancreas problems, nutritional deficiencies and lack of certain enzymes in the digestive system. It’s true that a dog can starve even while consuming large amounts of food if it can’t digest the nutrients properly, so don’t just eat poop out of boredom, see a vet if you have any concerns.
