Declutter Your Bathroom in 8 Easy Steps

The most hated room in our homes to clean or declutter is the bathroom. Once you have some ideas of what you need to do and a plan, it’s not that hard to do and it shouldn’t take that long. In most homes, the mere mention of cleaning the bathroom is thought of as the most dreaded job in any home.

If you have promised or challenged to declutter your home, the bathroom should be done too. So get to work, do it first and do that task and mark it off your list as “completed”.

Now for the 8 easy steps to declutter your bathroom:

1. Clear the medicine cabinet of all medications. Check the expiration dates and properly delete those that are old and past their expiration date. Check with your local pharmacy or hospital in your area to see if they have a program in place to accept expired medications for disposal. Health officials have advised that flushing any medication down the toilet is not the proper way to dispose of it. Also be sure to remove any labels from the bottles that have names, addresses and personal information on them and shred them. If you have children in the house, make sure that the medicines you keep have child-proof caps.

2. Remove any other items from your medicine cabinet. You will be surprised what you will find here. Order and decide what you have and what to dispose of. If it is an over-the-counter medication or ointment, check how to properly dispose of it. Take the necessary precautions for over-the-counter medications if you have children at home.

3. Under the sink, pull out everything and start sorting. If you have duplicates of certain items, such as shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion and liquid soap, combine them all in one bottle or container and discard the empty containers. Small plastic tubes or boxes are a great way to contain these items all in one place.

4. First aid equipment. Go and make sure you have all the supplies that are in a basic first aid kit; antiseptic, gauze pads, scissors, adhesive tape, Ace bandage, instant cold pack, latex gloves, Band-Aids, tweezers, and sting and bite treatments. If your first aid kit is missing any of these items, be sure to replace them. Keep them all together in a container or buy a first aid kit with the necessary items already provided.

5. Make-up and cosmetics. It’s a good idea to go through your makeup and cosmetics at least every 6 months and throw away what you haven’t used in that period of time. The mask in particular should be replaced every few months to prevent eye infections.

6. Perfumes and colognes. They have a life of 3 to 5 years, if they are kept properly, and should be thrown away if they notice a different smell. Although the perfumes and colognes do not “remove” the older they are the smell and the color will change.

7. Bed linen and towels. Sort all your sheets and pillows, bath towels, towels and hand towels. Match all your sheets and pillows together and get rid of the ones that aren’t a matching set. Do the same with your napkins and napkins. You may not have parts or sets of these, but go through and check for wear and holes and throw them away. If any of the items are still in good condition, donate them to a shelter or a shop.

8. Hair accessories. If you couldn’t resist buying any new hair ties, clips, bows, bands or even hair dryers or curling irons, then you need to take control of the situation. Decide which of the items you use the most and those you never use or probably will never use and throw them away. Again if they are usable and in good condition, donate them.
