Concern As Parents on Children Toys Safety – Mattel Toy Recall

The newspapers, the TV station, the internet and the parents’ forum and the conversation in the office corridor are talking about the recent recall of Mattel toys. As a mother to my 5-year-old angel, I am very concerned about this message. My mom told me this news at first recall about 2 weeks ago. I brushed it aside thinking this only happened in China. But in the back of my mind, my mind runs and pulls out my collections of the most recent toys that my husband, my colleagues in China bought for my daughter. Yes, there are Barbie toys, a lot.

Just yesterday, on the main newspaper and TV station of Singapore, the news of the recall of Mattel Toy was highlighted. Soon, I did a metal check and realized that 30% of my daughter’s toys (given as gifts by relatives, friends, relatives) are from Mattel. From Barbie, Polly Pockets, Dora and many other Disney characters. My heart is beating fast, I have become seriously worried.

Surpassing my internet, I began browsing Mattel’s website for more recall information. The link pointing to the Singapore recall was up, but it said it was under construction (Yuks, that’s not good!). Check on the Mattel Care hotline (only available during office hours). The phone was busy all day.

I am frustrated. I am extremely concerned since the news of the Dora toys recall was mentioned in our newspaper but not on Mattel’s website. This is conflict

As I subscribed to the Fisher Price (subsidiary brand of Mattel) newsletter for toys and updates, I was surprised that the CEO of Mattel, Bob Eckert, sent emails to his mailing list of members of Fisher Price reporting its recall.

However, I am willing to return these toys to Mattel. However, how do I tell my “princess” that she doesn’t have her toys to play with? 30% of her toy (2 full boxes) and 1 large Dora house! My parenting instinct tells me that I should tell her camly and leave her emotionally prepared to part with her voluntary toys.

So I pull her aside, show her the journal (which luckily has pictures of Barbies and other toys). I told him that some “bad guys” use bad paint and magnets in these toys. The bad things about these toys will hurt her and make her sick. So the mother is worried about her health. He specifically uses these words “Mommy loves you and I don’t want to see you sick. If these paintings on toys make you sick, I’m going to take them.” She began to understand what he meant. She said “Yeah, I don’t want to be sick. I can’t go to Sunday school and roller blade when I’m sick.” So I told her “So there are no Barbie dolls and Dora toys like mommy wants to put in. She replied and nodded with a ‘Yes.’

So it was good for me. My “princess” was very understanding and took this well.

As for me, nothing is more important than my daughter’s health. I’m sure the rest of the parents share this too.

However, some tips to share with parents when choosing toys.

1. Choose Brands that are well established.

Most of these companies are more responsible and take action if something happens or tighten their quality control process.

2. Choose toys that are relevant to the age of the children.

3. Check the ingredients used to make the toys and the countries where it was manufactured.

Yes, almost 80% of toys are manufactured in China.

Example: wooden brick toys. Those made from non-toxic paint from Israel can cause S$80 per bucket versus S$8 from a store in Singapore (made in China) or RMB 8 in China Once, my princess got a wooden blister on her finger when i was playing one of this when i was. only 36 months.

4. For special occasions such as birthdays or Christmas or children’s day, you can provide a list of toys or gifts that want to buy something for your children. This can prevent duplication of the same games or too many of one type of games versus others.

5. Identify if the toy can help the child in

– Pure creative play (Example: finger puppets)

– Innovation (Example: Beach or garden tool for exploration)

– Problem Solving (Puzzle; start with 2,3,4,6 pieces go to 12-24-64 pieces as they get older)

– Role play (Doll’s house, clothes)

Actors different characters (Dad or mom, rabbit, kitten or tiger etc.)

Whatever it is, a toy given to a child should not be seen as a pacifier or a tool of convenience for busy parents. Any items given to a child, especially when they are younger as babies or children, must be chosen with care and consideration. Toys are a very important part of children’s activities, especially when they are young. So choose with consideration and a lot of thought.
