What is Cradle Cap?

Cradle Cap is a rather temporary and harmless skin disease usually suffered by children aged two months to two years. In dermatological terminology, this skin condition is called infantile or neonatal seborrheic dermatitis. The disease is also known as crusta lactea, milk crust, or honeycomb disease. In general, it is not itchy; therefore, it does not worry the child much.

What are the symptoms?

In Cradle Cap, the affected area is covered with yellowish, scaly, oily, scaly and crusted skin rashes. Rashes are found on the scalp of recently born children and are often prominent around the ear, eyebrows or eyelids. The most common, it begins to happen in the first 3 months after the birth of the child. The same skin condition can also occur in other places. But in this case, it is called seborrhoeic dermatitis rather than cradle cap.

What are the causes?

In fact, the cause behind the cradle cap is not clearly defined. In any case, it is certain that the disease is not caused by any infection, allergy or by maintaining poor hygiene. It is believed that the cradle cap has to do with the hyperactive sebaceous glands in the skin of children. The hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands is due to the presence of the mother’s hormones in the child’s circulation.

Scientists also believe that skin yeasts, scientifically known as Pityrosporum ovale and recently renamed Malassezia furfur, are responsible for cradle cap. It has been speculated by nutritionally oriented practitioners that the disorder is caused by the child’s immature digestive system. They believe that the patient’s digestive system cannot absorb enough biotin and other vitamins of the B complex.

What is the remedy?

Since the real cause behind cradle cap is not clear, there is no absolute treatment for it. Dermatologists are often advised to apply vegetable or mineral oil freely to the scalp and leave it at night. Considering the fact that Malassezia yeasts thrive in oily environments, some are advised to leave the oil for periods of time. Softened scales can be brushed away with a soft brush, toothbrush, comb or cloth.

Some dermatologists recommend applying petroleum jelly (eg Vaseline) liberally at night as another popular treatment. Baby shampoo is often recommended; but the specialists are not unanimous. However, ketoconazole shampoos and creams occupy the first place in the medical treatment of moderate to severe cradle cap. In cases of mild cradle cap, home remedies are thought to be the appropriate treatment.
