Organizing – How to Get Rid of Things You Don’t Need

Some people have a hard time getting rid of things they don’t need. Are you stuck on an outfit from the 1970s or 1980s? Does it even fit? It probably doesn’t fit and is out of style (maybe). Clinging to things is not healthy. For example, if you went through a bad divorce, why would you want to hang on to the items that were given to you by your ex-wife or ex-husband? How do you expect to move forward in life if you are still stuck in the past? Throw out the old so you can make room for new experiences and things!

Organization – How to get rid of things you don’t need

When in doubt, throw it away. If you haven’t used something or worn an item of clothing in over a year, get rid of it. If you haven’t used that shovel, take it to Goodwill or donate it. If you haven’t worn a pair of jeans you bought last year, donate them to someone who will. The material items you have should not be so important if you have not used them in more than a year.

Ask yourself, “Why am I holding on to the past?” If you have children who are grown, why do you keep on their baby clothes? Obviously, they can’t wear it. It’s okay to hold on to a few “key” pieces, but keeping all of your baby clothes is ridiculous. Unless, of course, you plan to have another child!

If you have gone through a divorce, is it healthy to keep material items from your ex-spouse? No, it’s not, especially if it was a messy divorce. How can you move forward in a “new” relationship if you’re still stuck in the past? You will not move on or recreate your previous relationship. Throw away your past and start anew.

Remove things one room at a time. Tackle one room at a time as you get rid of things. You may want to start with the rooms that have the least amount of stuff. That way, you don’t get overwhelmed and you get used to the process of getting rid of things you don’t need.

Have a “Get Rid of Stuff Party”. Organize with the help of family and friends. Ask them to help you and have a fun day. Ask everyone to bring their favorite dish and have a “pot luck” celebration while you get rid of the stuff. Celebrate getting rid of the material items you no longer need. Make a party out of it and have a good time. It will take the “pressure” off of getting rid of your stuff and getting organized.

Organizing doesn’t have to be a painful process. If you have something, there is something wrong under the surface. You may need to talk to a counselor to get to the bottom of why you have things. The rule of thumb is: When in doubt, throw it out! If it’s been a year since you wore an item of clothing or used something, get rid of it. You can donate or give to family and friends. Chances are there is someone else who will get better use of your stuff than you.
