4 Tips for Choosing the Right Triathlon Running Shoe

When I started training for Triathlon, I had no idea of the amount or the specifics of the equipment I would need. Sure, I knew I needed a bike, running shoes, and some clothing, but I had no idea about watches, bike shoes, aero helmets, aero wheels, wetsuits, or any of the myriad other items. In fact, my first running shoes were just some I picked up at a local sports store for cheap. I just had no idea.

When I started to become more serious about my running and my running, I knew that I needed to buy some shoes that would allow me to have the best running performance. Once again, I was at a loss as to where to turn to start this process. I searched online and looked for various articles on running shoes. I found a lot of information specifically about marathon running or distance running. I haven’t found much information on specific ideas for triathlon shoes. I took some of the ideas from the information I found and began the process of buying shoes.

Along the way, I discovered many different ideas for selecting shoes that I would like to share in this post.

  1. Get Fit – No, this is not a redundant idea of getting fitter, but rather getting fit to the type of shoe you need. Most running specific stores will help you find out which shoe will be the best for you. Many of these stores will take you through a series of tests to determine which shoe will be best for you. Having done this a few times now, the process goes something like this. First, the sales representative will tell you a little about what you do to run, how long you’ve been running, and what your goals are in running. I am looking for and ask someone who has been with the store a while to have the best kind of discussion about my needs as a runner, especially since I focus on the specific race of Triathlon. Second, they have to be electronically, using a special pad that you are on, or manually, using the old metal sizing platform that is still cold, they will determine your size and the width of your foot. Third, they will go back and bring you a sample shoe for you to do some exercise. I always know that the sales person has to choose a shoe that he likes, so it is difficult for me to stick to the first one. shoe The sample shoe will be a neutral shoe with no lift or assistance to keep your foot straight. Fourth, the sales representative will have you put on a treadmill and run for 5-10 minutes while they record the way your feet fall. You’ll want to wear something you can run in comfortably. The last session I had like this, the gentleman even checked me from the side to make sure I landed properly. After completing this short run session, the sales representative will watch the video with you. He is looking for supination, which is the opposite of pronation and refers to the external roll of the foot during normal movement. If you have too much supination then you need to have a shoe that will help balance your feet. I have a pretty neutral fall on my feet so it hasn’t been a problem for me. In one of the places I visited, they stood me on a glass screen that took a measurement of the pressure points on my foot. This helped to understand the level of the arch of the foot. After all this data is collected, the sales representative will choose a shoe to try on. This adaptation process is very important.
  2. Get Choosy – The process of choosing your shoe with the data that was sent to you by the sales representative is one that you need to take your time. I have found that choosing the look and feel of the shoe is very important. If you don’t like the look of the shoe, then you’ll feel less excited about wearing it for running as well. If you don’t like the feeling then you won’t run. This choice is critical. You can be a little choosy about the shoe brand, but for me I want something that will give me support and comfort for many miles. Most trainers will last you 300-500 miles, so choose wisely which shoe you go with. Many times, the store will allow you to run on the treadmill or on a mini-track inside the store, some will even allow you to go outside to run in the shoes. Take enough time to decide which shoes you will run in for the duration of your training and run.
  3. Get More – Yes, get more than one pair. Usually what I do is find the right type of shoe in the shop. I certainly don’t want someone to spend 30 minutes to an hour helping me find a shoe, and then go home and buy it online. That is not genuine and is a terrible practice. However, they go home and start watching other couples. You want to have a rotation of shoes. When I started rotating shoes, I bought 3 of the same type of shoe. Two of them I swapped back and forth on training days, then the third was for racing. This process worked quite well, but from here I said that you should have 2-3 pairs of shoes during training that are different types of shoes. They may have a different amount of cushion or a different amount of drop. Shoe drop is the amount of drop from heel to toe. You can have anything from 0 to 10 mm drop or more. I have tried having 3 different amounts of drops in my shoes now. The theory is that you use different muscles of the foot, leg and calf with different amounts of drop. Therefore, if you use different types, then you will have a stronger overall performance. So you want to select a shoe for running. If you are a sprinter, you may want to buy a shoe that doesn’t have a lot of cushioning and is therefore lighter for running. If you are running longer than you want more cushions for long distances. Most of this process of choosing your running shoe comes from trial and error.
  4. Get Set-up – The last tip for getting the right triathlon shoe is to get your shoe setup right. What I mean by this is that you don’t have a ton of time during transitions to tie your shoe or to put on your shoe. You want to make quick work of putting on your running shoes for the running race. I prefer to use elastic shoes for this process. The way I get my shoe fit is by buying my elastic shoelaces online. So I changed the shoelaces and trimmed the elastics. Next, I put the shoe on with very loose shoelaces. From this point, I tightened the shoelaces around my foot already in the shoe. If you do this before putting your foot in the shoe, some parts of the shoe will be too tight. So I made the appropriate adjustments to feel comfortable with the new elastic shoelaces. I don’t want a pinch. Then he goes for a run. I want to keep track of the mileage for the shoe, so we know when to exchange for new ones. You want your shoe to fit well, but not too tight since you have a lot of training and running miles.

I hope these tips help you choose your running shoe for triathlons.
