The Importance of Reading for Writers According to a Writing Consultant and Editor

Hello!

Reading and writing naturally go together. It is not only the reading of the work of a writer, however, but it is also what should proceed to write. Writers are some of the most voracious readers! Here are some good reasons to read if you are interested in writing.

1) Reading actively activates the imagination and creates better thinking. Studies have shown that this can be true for up to five days after reading a novel. Fiction writers are therefore not only entertainers, but “brain enhancers”!

2) Reading lets you know what’s popular in the market. This does not mean that it should be imitated. However, it shows types of things that interest readers. Perhaps, more importantly, it can show what is missing from the market. An original is better than a 1000 copies of something already known.

3) Reading the classics is important to determine what creates longevity in character or plot. Changes in style can make classics seem dated or stagnant to their era because of their diction or syntax, but there’s a reason some books remain classics while their contemporaries fade with age. Examine what makes a character, scene, or plot unforgettable—and therefore timeless—and remember that. This is also true of themes.

4) Reading expands one’s vocabulary. The words are literally sunk into your brain and can seep into your writing. If you are not sure if the word has been used correctly – look it up! Chances are, your mind has already provided you with the perfect word through what you unconsciously learned while reading.

5) Reading inspires. Laura Ingalls Wilder, of Little House on the Prairie fame, advised reading a good story before writing. I have often heard other writers say that reading a book inspired them to write. Reading good fiction inspires good writing.

6) When reading fiction, I often ask agents to recommend reading in your genre to see what works, what is popular, how it can be done well, what should be included, etc. This is true, but I would suggest reading it outside of your own. genre too. At the root of every story is character and plot. You can also learn about character and plot from a genre very different from your own. Even a book you don’t like can teach you something, even if it’s just something you want to be sure not to include in your own writing.

7) It is important not only to read fiction as a novelist, but also non-fiction. As an author of historical fiction, this is obvious. I have to learn the past and its details to write. Even for contemporary writers, however, non-fiction can provide information about a character’s career or hobbies or a place for the setting. Or, perhaps, a personality portrait of the character’s type can be explored through a psychology book.

Happy reading and happy writing!

My best to you all,

Megan
