Should Children Be Allowed to Earn Money?

At the mention of the words “child labor” many people might imagine a heartbreaking scene straight out of a Charles Dickens novel; with malnourished children enslaved on an assembly line, it produced good for cruel and predatory adults. The concept of children working for money is somehow associated with the denial of childhood rights and forced labor.

Unfortunately in Jamaica, poverty and ignorance has led too many parents to limit the education of their children at an early age, turning to the fields, markets and streets to contribute an income to the family home. We’ve all seen children in uniform laying out their wares, explaining that they needed to raise enough money to go to school the next day.

The question of children working for an income came to the forefront a few months ago around a television commercial that featured young people, obviously not yet in their teens, singing for a telephone company. A complaint was raised that the advertiser was unethical to use children to promote his product. Eventually, a warning from the Ministry of Labor and Welfare was issued reminding people that children of a certain age should not be employed.

The whole issue left me perplexed and disturbed. Why should talented children not be paid for the value they create in the market, like their adult counterparts?

Child labor and the law

To learn more about restrictions on child employment, I reviewed the Care and Protection of Children Act 2004. Article 33 states that “no one shall employ a child under the age of thirteen for the performance of any work”. Section 34 outlines employment restrictions for children aged 13 to 15, ensuring that they are not involved in hazardous activity or night or industrial work.

However, Section 35 indicates that, notwithstanding the provisions of Sections 33 and 34, the Minister responsible for labor may “issue a permit to a child to permit that child to be employed for the purpose of participating in artistic performances.” Any offense against the provisions in this Act may result in a fine not exceeding $500,000 and/or a prison sentence not exceeding six months.

Section 38 also notes that the restrictions do not apply to work done by a child “under an order of detention in a juvenile correctional center or a community service order; or as part of the instruction of that kid in every school,” as long as it isn’t. dangerous or interfere with the education of the child.

Children can contribute to economic growth

One of the problems currently facing Jamaica is that we have insufficient business activity to produce desperately needed jobs. While we are looking for ideas to turn our country’s economy around, we cannot ignore the part that children can play. If we do not develop an entrepreneurial perspective and the skills to earn money in our youth, they will graduate from school expecting to receive a job that will not be available.

I think it is vital for parents to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit in their children. Knowing how to create value for others and receive a monetary reward in return is one of the best lessons to learn from them. Several large businesses in the retail, manufacturing and hotel industries continue to thrive today because the founders incorporated their children into the business from an early age.

Even if you don’t have a family business, you can still teach your children about making money. The job gives them experience in offering a service or providing a product, builds their savings accounts, and teaches them important money management habits.

Money making ideas for kids

– Car wash: Children can go in groups of two or three around their communities and offer to clean their neighbors’ cars.

– Animal care: Children with a love for animals can provide dog care and pet-sitting services.

– Food sales: Children who love to cook can earn money by making meals or snacks and selling them on weekends.

– Baby sitting: Busy parents always need help with their children, so it could be a profitable mission for children with a talent for taking care of younger children.

– Tutor Services: Children who are knowledgeable about school subjects such as math or English, or who are computer geeks, can teach others in these areas.

– Sitting at home: When the neighbors go on vacation, the children can offer to water the plants, rake leaves or feed their animals in their absence.

– Landscaping: Mowing the lawn, planting flowers, mowing and trimming are light landscaping activities that children can do for the neighbors.

– Backyard garden: Encourage a green thumb by giving your children a space to grow vegetables and herbs that can be sold to supermarkets and health stores.

– Artistic creations: Kids can design jewelry, make greeting cards, design promotional materials, create websites, produce artwork, do face painting at birthday parties, and more.

It is important to monitor your children’s business activities to ensure that they stay safe and that their income does not interfere with their school work.
