Potty Training 2 Year Old Toddlers

Many first time parents are hesitant to start potty training; they talk to their pediatrician, read books and ask friends for advice. I wonder how to potty train, and what age to start potty training; this can be a bit difficult as each child develops at his own pace, but a recent study concluded that the average age to start training is 27 months. Some children start earlier, others later.

Potty training can be an exciting time for you and your baby; are growing and learning something new.

A few things to keep in mind are:

  • First of all, you should teach your child “potty lingo” words like pee pee, poo poo, potty, and toilet.
  • The child must have a vocabulary of up to 900 words at least so that they are able to communicate clearly with you and let you know when they need to go.
  • They should also be able to pull their pants up and down so they can go when they need to.
  • The child must show an interest in using the bathroom and can also ask questions.

You’ve heard the horror stories of potty training and wonder if you and your child are ready to give it a try; if your child has already shown an interest in the potty, then take advantage of this and start training.

You can help teach your child the language of potty long before training begins. When you change his diaper, say the words or make a face, he will associate the words with the action and it will be a little easier when it comes time for the potty. Explain what you do and why when you change the child also so that they begin to understand the process of using the bathroom.

Introduce the potty chair to your child, but don’t put it down; let him know what is for and what is his and only. Remember that this is very new for him, if he is scared; do not force him to use the pot. Once he expresses interest in it, you can start letting him sit on it with his clothes. Once the child is comfortable with this experience, the pants can come down and they can sit on the potty as well to become comfortable with the experience. One of these times they can also go, which means explaining the feelings they had before going so that they begin to associate that with the use of the bathroom.

When you finally put it on the jar, make a big deal! Children love to please their parents and praising them will let them know how happy you are. Use a reward system when they go. There can be a treasure chest to choose a toy from when they manage to go. This praise and additional reinforcement can go a long way with a child wanting to use the potty.

Experts differ on whether or not to train your child to stand and pee, actually; it doesn’t matter if you train your child to stand and pee or to sit on the potty, it all depends on how comfortable your child is with potty training and if he wants to sit. It is also useful to let your child go to the bathroom with his father or another male model to show that there is no danger and that this is how “big people” go to potty.

It is important to remember that potty training takes time and a lot of patience. Stay calm and remember that this is all new for a child and also very exciting. The more fun potty training is, the better it will go.
