Self-Esteem – 3 Parenting Tips for Increasing School Performance
Is your child’s self-esteem spiraling because of grades? Do you feel powerless? Inside find out how being a detective can help you.
Self-esteem and childhood wisdom:
A father asked his son, “How do you like going to school?” His son replied, “Going to school is good. Coming home is also good. It’s just the time in between I don’t like it.”
Parents, if your child feels this way, their grades are probably bad and their self-esteem has dropped like a runaway elevator. Here is a letter from a concerned mother.
Subscriber letter:
Dear Jean,
“My 9 year old son is in 4th grade and is falling behind fast. His teacher made two calls home saying my son is having trouble paying attention in class. His grades are HIDEOUS!!!
I’m not sure what’s going on. I don’t think she is doing school and learning fun, and I want to help him!!
We have a limited income, so tutoring will be very difficult.
Thank you,
Jennifer
Parents, self-esteem is your child’s sense of self. It may drop because of poor school performance. There are 3 ways you can help, but first you need to do some detective work. Having been an elementary school teacher, I loved getting parents involved. Here is some of what I wrote to Jennifer. Maybe it can help you too.
Self-Esteem – 3 Parenting Tips to Increase School Performance
Dear Jennifer,
I volunteer in my son’s 2nd grade class. When I saw how tired and lifeless his teacher was, I moved him to a better teacher.
But before taking such a drastic approach, I advise you to visit your child’s class. As a parent you have the right. Maybe you can even volunteer in his class like I did. Your goal is to be a detective. Find out what happens.
First, arrange a conference with his teacher. Find out if your child is acting out in class, acting out in their sleep, being bullied, or if something else is going on.
Second, work out a contract with your child’s teacher on what to do, for example, attention. He would need to bring a small card, a weekly calendar card, or even a simple note from the teacher each day indicating how much he did that day.
Depending on the number of positive points you receive, you can use the 80 fun activities I sent you for subscribing to my newsletter. He can choose a fun activity reward with you for attention. They suggest rewarding him every day until he is no longer needed. I have added another list of rewards in case you have misplaced it.
Third, ask your child’s teacher for useful homework that you can teach at home. They are the key to helping him improve or recover.
Conclusion of self-esteem
Look, Jennifer, you have a fantastic opportunity here. You can be a good detective. From what you learn take the appropriate steps. Increase their self-esteem. When he does, he will enjoy going to school, coming home, and all the time in between.
