Should Girls Be Playing Youth Football? NO

Should girls play youth soccer?

This may be a bit of a controversial subject for some but in the society we live in the answer should be a resounding no!

Do some girls have the size and aggressiveness to play youth soccer? Absolutely, I see my players’ sisters who would make excellent soccer players, but I’m not sure what would be best for the girl or the boys on our youth soccer team.

Today’s society seems to want to devalue women, rap music with its demeaning depiction of women as wasteful and abuseable, TV and movies that portray women as sexual objects worthy of abuse and the same with print media and the spread of pornography.

In inner-city Omaha nearly 70% of our players don’t have a man at home. If you think I’m exaggerating, we had games with 2 people in the stands and both were female, not enough for a chain team. This was not a one time deal, we had several games where we did not have 3 males to run the chains. Many of our players do not have a model of behavior in the house to “copy” how to treat a woman well. Children often see first hand women being physically and mentally abused and of course they hear it in the music they listen to, on TV and in the press. I have been coaching youth football for 15 years and the problem of the “dadless” home is getting worse every year. Tom Osborne in his book “Faith in the Game” states that this problem is growing and is responsible for most of the crimes and problems with young males.

If we let girls play soccer with boys, we are teaching boys that rough physical contact with females is acceptable behavior. In fact, as coaches, we should encourage and reward this physical contact. Our actors would be used to and be used to being physical with females, the act desensitizes all those who participate in the activity of physical force that is applied to females by males. The female in the meantime learns that hard physical contact with males is acceptable, it is now a habit. Now, while having females on your team may help the short-term progress of some of our football teams, I’m not sure it will help the boy or girl in their long-term development as productive members of the our society.

Girls are good and even better than boys in many activities, this is not about girls who have the ability to play. It is about breaking the abusive cycle of many parent families or even two parent families. In my mind, coaching youth football is much more than teaching kids how to run good football plays and how to block and tackle. It is about teaching valuable life lessons that the young football player can take with him for use throughout his life. My father taught me how to treat women with reverence and respect and I have been rewarded for that behavior with a wonderful wife and a very satisfying family life. Dad not only told me, he showed me, even when he and mom had disagreements, they were never loud or physical. He modeled proper behavior every day, many of our children NEVER see proper behavior modeled for them. As a boy, we were threatened that we would hit a girl or even push a material era of “deadly sin” that could never happen. If this happened, I would have been treated by my father in the most severe way, in addition it was also considered cowardly.

In 2001 we had an 8 year old soccer player from one of our Omaha teams punch a girl in the face over some kind of disagreement in the playing area of our field. Of course, we talked to the boy and we knew that he should never hit a woman and we dismissed him from our program with the promise that he could come back next year if we saw a significant improvement in his attitude and actions. We felt he needed the program and contact with strong male role models. The player had to attend every practice and game and watch, not play. We have convinced the parents of the hit girl not to press formal charges. Believe it or not, the players of the “grandpa” argued the children’s case and said that the girl “pushed him first”. That made me sick, the poor kid has no father in the house and a “grandpa” who thinks it’s okay to punch girls in the face who push you first. No wonder his daughter had no man at home. I wanted to smack the grandfather in the face, but I think that would not be the right message for the child to see either. We really worked on this child, but I feel that there is a very high probability that this player will be a woman user/abuser when he gets older and will have a very unsatisfactory family life. While the grandson came back, the grandfather was not invited to train for us again.

I will never allow females to play in my youth football program. I don’t want our life lessons and memories of our football players to include when our stud linebacker got knocked into the pads by a running girl who had blisters and tears running down her face.

However, some people bite the hand that feeds them. In our rural program we have not had any women’s football enrolled. In Omaha we had a few moms trying to sign their daughters up for soccer. After the initial disappointment went away and the mother was told why we think it makes sense in the long run for females not to play, the mothers were very supportive. I can think of only one case where the mother didn’t “get it” and pulled her son out of the program because we wouldn’t allow her daughter to be beaten by the boys on our team. I can still see her today, a single mother with 3 children who needed the program that refused to listen to reason. This mother had two front teeth missing, probably caused by the same cycle we tried to help break.

Today we face football and also the fight between boys and girls, what is boxing next? or how about the final fight? Where do we draw the line? If girls are as good as boys at football, why not boxing? Why not fight? Why not Ultimatre Fighting?

There are those who don’t care about the long-term implications for both parties, they just have a selfish desire to see their children excel, no matter the cost. I’m angry about what’s in store for that poor girl.

Let’s draw the line at tackle football.
