Growing Up Together at the Soccer Store

As I’ve gotten older, being efficient has become a bigger priority for me. While prioritizing that I do things in a logical order without wasting time is great on paper, having kids makes it very difficult. Have you ever “helped” your kids get ready for the school year that starts in August? How many times do you go to the same stores because they “forgot” that they needed pencils, a new bag, folders, binders, pens, paper, or some other supply. I think the week before school was the worst. Then came football season. The football store is now welcoming to me personally when I enter.

Gavin decided to play his first sport of football at the age of seven. I grew up playing other sports, but there seemed to be less violence in soccer than soccer, and keeping a giant metal bat away from kids wasn’t a terrible idea, so the prospect of Saturday mornings at the local field seemed pretty good at the beginning.

When we registered for our local league at the community center, we were given a list of things to buy at the soccer store. A jersey, some pads, a few items that would help if you wanted to practice on your own, a mouth guard, all the things you could expect.

He started on our way to his first practice, “Dad, I forgot my cleats.” No problem, just stop by the house, grab them, and let’s practice. On arrival at our house, there are no studs where they are. Go to the football store, a pair of cleats please.

On the way home from the first practice we talked about how it was going. He was looking for fun, challenge, maybe if he was really lucky tired. Gavin’s rating, “Timmy had really cool sweatbands.” In the football store, we went to become proud owners of neon green sweat bands with black stripes

At this point, you knew where the story was going. Every practice, game and tournament that followed required a stop for something. Who knew soccer jerseys came in so many different “cool” colors?

I never had a problem with any of the crew being protective or helping to teach the sport. I also liked buying things like whistles, and rules for the time Gavin thought being a referee could be fun.

In many ways, we united around that football tent. As he grew, the dimensions increased. We moved from one side of the tent to the other. I wish I had taken a picture of my son and I in the mirror the first time we ever strolled into the store. We could have told the story of our lives through that business.

It was never efficient, nor when “we” to go, or what “we” to buy, but it was a great place to bond and grow. I have no idea how much money I spent over the years, but it was worth every penny for the time with my son and seeing the smile on his face.
