Three Secrets To Helping Your Child With Primary Math At Home

You will find these three tips in the secret weapons of every good teacher. And they probably use them without even knowing it!

1. Sequence your information properly.

The first thing to remember when helping your child with elementary math is that you probably take a lot of knowledge about a certain topic for granted. Many parents just start in the wrong place when it comes to consolidating their child’s mathematical knowledge, which quickly leads to frustration on the part of the child and the adult.

It’s important to eliminate any assumed knowledge you already have in a certain subject, and given that most of the typical elementary math content will seem simple enough to most adults, this means starting completely from scratch… especially when it comes to young students. age four to six years.

The easiest way to do this is to consult your school’s ‘aim and sequence’ for the particular content area you are helping, or see the curriculum handbook for your particular state or territory’s education authority. .

This document establishes exactly what primary students should learn about the topic, when they will learn it, and the order in which each component will be introduced.

You’ll probably be amazed at how simple each step is once you break the topic down into bite-sized pieces!

2. Use relevance.

The second thing you should do is use relevance to help your child with elementary math.

This means relating the topic to their world in real terms.

It is easy to just focus on the theory of the math concept that you have helped your child – after all, this is what you end up sticking in his brain to use later. But the fact is, they are unlikely to remember at all, unless they can identify with the concept personally.

So, if you are looking for groups of numbers, instead of drawing pictures or numbers on paper, use real objects such as small Lego men or pieces of fruit to demonstrate the idea. Have your child move and add the objects themselves.

If you show fractions, actually divide a real pizza or a cake to modify the different parts of a whole (note that the use of “all” squares can keep out of problems here).

Or, for an exploration of graphics and data, physically map family members’ favorite ice cream flavors and create a graph of the results together.

Once you have linked the math concepts to your child’s real world, you can return to the theory of the topic using traditional pencil and paper methods. But if you provide some relevance and authenticity first, you’ll be amazed at how much faster they’ll catch on… and they might even enjoy it!

3. Use manipulatives.

Remember that children learn by actually doing, so, in the same way that you linked the theories to their personal experience in the step above, be sure to allow your child to explore a concept with a practical example.

This could be using a clock face with movable hands when exploring the concept of time, for example. Or he could be using Diene blocks or an abacus to consolidate his understanding of place value.

The important thing is to make sure your child has the opportunity to get their hands dirty and physically handle a few learning resources or objects when exploring a new math topic.

In the same way, try to find as many opportunities to apply your new knowledge in your daily life as possible… whether it’s suggesting how to cut a cake for dinner so that everyone gets an equal serving , or calculating how. a lot of time there is until a certain event like the school drop-off or his favorite TV program.

By actually “doing” the work themselves and applying their new knowledge to real contexts, your child will be on their way to a more confident understanding of numbers.

And you’ll have more time on your hands to plan the next fun lesson!
