5 Simple Strategies for Raising Awesome Kids

Remember the friends you had in high school who gave you a car with no expectation of responsibility versus those who had to work for their car?

I’m sure you noticed the same difference I did, in terms of the level of care and appreciation they had for their vehicles.

When my children were that age and a classmate was given a car, they got into trouble. The children who had to work for the car enjoyed it!

When you don’t get the things you want, you don’t appreciate them.

Doing chores as a child teaches children to be responsible, accountable and disciplined. Does this also build a “proper work ethic” for their future?

Zig Ziglar, motivational speaker and author, was the tenth of twelve children. He was born in “LA”, (which is lower Alabama), and grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi. His mother had a fifth grade education, and his father died when he was 5 years old during the Depression.

Zig said: “Mother was a wise woman. We were all hard workers, because we had three milk cows and a big garden, and we survived despite all the difficulties.” As a child, Zig Ziglar’s job was to weed his large garden. When he told his Mother he had finished weeding the garden she was checking to see how he was doing. His Mother said: “For someone else’s child the job was done well, but for my child you can do a better job!” He went and tended that garden again and rechecked it!

Ziglar said, “We all had a wonderful childhood.”

Ziglar said: “Well, first of all, my mother a very wise woman, despite her limited education. She taught us with (a) sentence sermon. She taught us: “Tell the truth / Always tell / It costs what it will. / For the one who hides the mistake he made / Do the wrong thing always”, and “When a task is once started / Do not leave until it is done / And be a matter big or small / Do it well or not at all .’ “Ziglar agreed that this was poetry. “She was a very wise woman, very disciplined, very loving, and those biblical principles, that’s what I know, that’s what we were raised.”

Dr. John Maxwell, #1 leadership guru, coach, and one of my mentors says that when I was a kid he gave me a to-do list at the beginning of the week.

If he hadn’t finished his homework, he wouldn’t be allowed to go to the restaurant or the cinema with his family during the weekend. Rather, he stays at home and finishes his homework. He later learned to do his chores on time.

What is the greatest gift you can give your children?

The greatest gift you can give your children is to teach them a good work ethic, giving them the jobs to do to earn the things they want and need.

The works taught us how to work hard, to be responsible, responsible and respectful giving a good foundation for our future.

So, what are the 5 simple strategies for raising great kids?

1) Give them age-appropriate chores. Start helping them learn a good work ethic at a young age so they will become responsible, responsible and caring adults.

2) Every morning and evening, when your child wakes up and goes to sleep, say with a smile how much you love them and care for them, say something of love to them and give them a kiss on their cheek. Ask her over dinner about her day. Remember that you are here to help your children solve their problems and make good choices in a gentle, caring atmosphere.

If your child has a learning disorder, find the best teaching method to help them learn and grow. Don’t belittle or despise them. Help your child find a place for them to learn with patience and encouragement.

Remember what Benjamin Franklin asked himself every morning, “what good will I do today?” And every evening Franklin asked himself: “What good have I done today?”

3) Take time from your planned commitment to attend your child’s sports games, dance recitals, orchestra or band concerts. Attend with a smile and be proud of these small moments for them. Show that you care and love. Give them your TIME, your patience, your kindness and your encouragement!

Turn off your cell phone and leave it in the car!

4) Praise all the good things they are doing so they will continue to do it. Correct the wrong, but do not be afraid to fail your children! If they do something wrong, tell them privately not in front of their friends or other family members

5) Show your children every day that their parents love and respect each other. Never belittle a husband in front of your children. Say only words of love that give, hugs, kisses and friendship. If there is a problem, meet privately to discuss the issue or problem!

By following these 5 simple strategies you will raise awesome kids too!
