A Partner to One With Disability

What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you see someone with a disability? Do you have someone close to you who lives with a disability or do you know someone who has a disability? Now let me disclose this, that I have been married to someone who is visually impaired (totally blind) for the past four and a half years. I live a happy life and we have been blessed with an adorable 3 year old daughter, her name is Serene. What made me marry a disability? Let me start by saying that in my wildest dreams, I never imagined being married to someone with a disability.

Indeed, in my immediate family, there is no one of this type nor did I grow up seeing anyone like him. And so, the answer to this question is just simple; LOVE is what got me married. I found love in him. I found peace in him. I found the caring nature in him. I found warmth in him. And the greatest of all, is that he fears God, an element that I value a lot. I see here his disability. I focus on his strength and I can tell you that he is a man of greatness.

The biggest handicap in life is having a negative attitude. It is difficult to help such a person; it is difficult to succeed with a negative attitude. You will agree with me that if you are short in nature, you need someone taller than you to reach something at a higher level, or you may need to climb a ladder or a stool to get it. This is the same case for someone with disabilities who only needs a hand to reach what he needs and do what he wants once he has it in hand. I have come to learn that every person is endowed with a great potential inside.

My husband inspires my life. Sometimes I forget that I can’t see until society has put a reminder in me. Are there any challenges we face as a family? Well, like any other marriage, I can tell you that we faced many challenges together. However, we have learned to rise above our challenges and focus on our potential. God has been our strength. Through him, we have come this far. Our secret strength has been trust in God.
