Why Footwork is Important in Martial Arts – Part 1 of 3
Footwork is one of the first things we teach all students who enter our realm that we know as Dojo (school of thought). Whether you are a beginner or an advanced level from another martial arts method, everyone starts with our famous foot exercises. There is nowhere near them here.
The footwork for me is the locomotion of our Ketsugo Jujutsu or the Arnis / Kali / Escrima that we also teach here. This is the basic foundation that makes our methods that we offer here work and this is why I say this.
From my own personal experience and past encounters I have come across, I have noticed that you do not stand still in a fight. Both you and your attacker will dance around the parking lot or back alley trying to find your opponent openings or weaknesses. Now, before I understood the importance of good footwork, I had my share of black eyes and broken noses and yes even bruised testicles (Ouch!) because I didn’t move my feet enough
My footwork was poor then even though I knew enough footwork from boxing. I never put weight into it and just didn’t care about moving and wasting energy in a fight. I thought I would just block my opponent’s shots and do a give and take, exchange power shots to finish the fight. I had a gift for hitting very hard back then.
Until one day someone tried to stab me with a knife and I stopped? Of course not! I moved like the wind, or at least that’s how I felt. When he cut, I moved. When he stabbed, I continued to move my feet. Your feet are responsible for keeping you out of harm’s way. They also help you get closer to the attacker to close the distance on your opponent. That way, you can clear any other attacks that you miss.
If I had kept my old tendency of thinking about trading with this guy, I would have been really hurt. The first thing I quickly learned that day is that you don’t want to block any knife attack. A person trained to use an edged weapon will circle around your block as soon as they feel you stop their energy. That’s what they’re taught to do because that’s what we teach with our knife development drills.
The best way to defend against an edge weapon is to not be there. Get out of dodge mate, quick! Get on your horse and gallop away while kicking up that big cloud of dust. Footwork is your best option against any type of armed assailant other than your mind.
