Swaddle Your Infant to Happiness
Swaddling is the ancient practice of wrapping your baby in a blanket. It has recently become re-popularized by Dr. Harvey Karp’s book The Happiest Baby on the Block. The restriction of movement that swaddling provides replicates the uterus and thus provides warmth and security to a newborn. Many parents say that swaddling has helped their newborn fall asleep, stay asleep, and be soothed more easily. When the child is properly swaddled, it prevents his arms from flying and staggering, or from scratching his face.
Parents who struggle with colic have been especially big supporters of swaddling, as they have found that it can be a great help to calm their fussy baby.
You can look after a newborn in the day and at night. Since your child just left an environment where every movement was forced, this is what your child knows and what made him feel safe. You have just been thrust into a large open world. Giving them a familiar feel can often be what is needed to calm them down.
When your baby is about one month old, it is generally recommended to reduce the amount of waking hours in which your baby is engaged, because it can hinder mobility and development. It’s fine to keep rocking it for naps and at night if your baby sleeps better that way.
When your child is able to turn (between two to five months of age), then there is a concern for his tight band at night or naptime. A tightly clothed baby can roll over on his stomach, but he can’t roll over. Sleeping on your stomach is a risk factor for SIDS. This would be a good time, however, to teach your baby to sleep without being caught. If your baby sleeps even better while swaddled, then swaddle more freely or leave one or both arms out so your baby has more mobility. Remember to make sure your baby doesn’t sleep in an overheated room when laying down, as overheating is also a risk factor for SIDS.
If your baby doesn’t like being cuddled, you can try to move the blanket away or leave one or both arms.
