Heart of a Teacher

When my kids were in elementary school, I was an assistant until they were in junior high. So it wasn’t pretty. When we moved to Maryland, they said, “Mom, can you please not get a job at our school? So, I worked in an after school program and in the summer for a year and took a couple of courses of early education as a backup plan while looking for a full-time job.

I enjoyed my career in another field until my daughter graduated from college. We moved to Texas while she was in the military, then moved to California so I could just be a nanny and babysit my grand kids for a few years. They moved and we moved.

After leaving California, I enjoyed substitute teaching for a few years and had the opportunity to teach elementary school at a charter school for one school year. Then, Covid hit and I went back to being a substitute teacher for a semester with 7th graders and I loved it.

I loved having my membership to a teacher’s store and I don’t want to give it up. Although I have moved on to another job, I still have a teacher’s heart and plan to return to substitute teaching once I retire. I’m helping a friend start a non-profit and I’m focused on fundraising and waiting to see what direction life takes. I want to see my friend’s dream of building a school.

I have a Sudanese granddaughter and I want to have something to show her when she is older than we can do in her mother’s homeland. I want my friend to have something to show his boys.

When I started my new job, I still had my closet and room full of teaching materials that I had accumulated last year before the Covid. I donated a lot, but I kept some items just in case. When school starts this fall, I will donate the rest so it can go through my room and into the closet.

I still plan to collect school bags and supplies and keep my membership to the teacher’s store. I still go there on Saturdays. I am inspired every time.

I still have the heart of a teacher. I pray that God will provide the funding to make my friend’s dream come true. I pray that there will be more to the story and we will have pictures to show of happy school children in a new school, full of all the necessary materials and smiling teachers who can focus on learning instead of survival.

We are so blessed in America. I want my grandchildren to love school and learning. I want to have teachers who love to be with them. As long as I can, I will always be involved in some way. Here’s to the future.
