Pros and Cons of Distance Learning This COVID-19 Pandemic

It is now more than a week for our mixed teaching/learning situation in the midst of this testing time where everyone has challenges to face different activities.

As a classroom teacher then, now online guide to my selected and lucky angels, well, the daily obstacle has been hard, challenging and, at times, taxing on the psyche. Yes, not all of my students are able to cope simply because they do not have the necessary technology such as Android phone, iPad, desktop, laptop or any of those educational tools that some of the lucky few have.

Well, given the said situation, I, for one, believe that parents could do something worthwhile for the education of their children, exerting all the efforts to have a functional phone just for an online class. However, there are various reasons why some parents do not have the ability to provide for their children simply because of poverty, lack of work, lack of education or motivation to keep up with current trends in education and the delivery of learning especially this COVID-19 pandemic. .

However, there are advantages and disadvantages of distance learning, especially for blended learning, for children and parents.

PRO

1. Children now have a lot of time to browse the various applications around to get lessons absorbed, applied in their daily grind.

2. Parents can see how their children use their learning time. They can also help budget their time to do all the work at hand without having other tasks left. Teachers, like me, send a home guide for their students, which serves as a reference, for their subjects to be taken for a specific time, with a number of minutes included.

3. Children can demonstrate their skills in using the internet, for example in researching a story to read, a photo to write an essay, and facts about important events in history, especially during the holidays and other commemorative exercises in Social Sciences subjects, to mention. one.

4. Parents have time to help their children with their homework in reading and writing, even the difficulties that their children encounter in numbers, science and so on.

5. Children also have time to be more talkative in front of their camera or what to answer questions, share stories and other activities where speaking is the goal especially in how they express themselves, with confidence minus the face-to-face interaction face

6. Parents, above all, have the possibility to learn as well, a sort of having a review of their previous school; of course, with updated information where those irrelevant ones had been changed to a more appropriate one, especially with Science subjects, say number of planets, etc.

7. The children also have the opportunity to become citizens of the whole world all about the internet of things and to collaborate with other students around the world. Yes, the teachers must have a teacher friend from another country, say a Science class in the Philippines who co-learns with the Science class in the USA about the different landscapes during the winter, and of course, the sunny weather in Philippines. With videos, photos and the like, the two students in these two countries will be able to learn a lot from each slide presentation shared through Google Meet, Zoom meeting, among other technological tools suitable for this purpose.

CONS

1. Children who do not have a reliable internet connection are left behind when it comes to online learning. However, with modules available around; well, everyone has the opportunity to learn the concepts, samples and deep learning once a conscientious teacher implements enrichment or remedial programs for those who need those. Yes, creativity is key to providing all learning opportunities to children who face technological challenges in online learning. In addition to the lack of those gadgets such as the Android phone, lappie or desktop, the Internet charge also becomes an obstacle, for which it can be afforded when the parents are unemployed, in dire poverty and you know what.

2. Parents suffer even more stress when their children cannot keep up with their peers, neighbors in competition with their children, and other scenarios about unequal opportunities, a sad majority of reality in the my class belongs to this situation where it stays with the Juans is. impossible to do.

3. Children, those who are enterprising and all, resort to deception online. Yes, there is a group chat where the answers to the modules are uploaded and a lazy bone will just copy paste those and viola, get the perfect score, the recognition later like with the highest honors and so on. Oh, this unfortunate state of education could be a training ground for future leaders who will not do healthy things, but for self-aggrandizement, and so on.

4. Parents have all the burden when their children have not yet mastered time management, discipline and honesty in doing their homework, say review lessons before getting online, answer the forms with integrity and the like.

5. Children have more time to be involved with different things on the Internet. Yes, some are good at browsing different sites and they could be in great danger when they opened some dangerous websites inappropriate for their mental age, corrupting their innocent minds with garbage and other ideologies that could harm them than helping to improve the their literacy and numeracy challenges.

6. Parents are having problems with their children who respond to the modules, especially when they have more than 10 in a week, plus they have 4 kiddos having this type of modality. However, in the online class, when an Android phone is available, how could they have the same time to participate when they could barely face a low Internet signal, load and other challenges present in a home of desire.

you go there If you happen to be free from such challenges, you are lucky to face all these challenges, and you would emerge victorious having the continuity of learning in this trying time. However, grit, resilience and perseverance can be our saving grace when faced with these glaring realities. No matter the challenges in our way towards the teaching/learning journey, we always expect the best result through our best effort. Keep your head up, always. Keep safe, sound and a saint. Cheers!
