How to Handwrite Your Way to Better Grades
Make no mistake that good writing is no longer important in this world of computers, smartphones and voice recorders. It is as important to you as it was to your grandfather when he went to school.
Poor writing is one of the main reasons why students get low grades. Do not have a laptop with you in the classroom when answering exam questions. You have your pen and a piece of paper. If you write well, you have a much better chance of making good grades.
Let us briefly examine what the act of writing entails. It happens to be a complex process.
First, you must form a “concept” or picture in your mind. Then you have to put this into words and arrange the words into sentences. Next, you must write all the necessary letters and symbols on the paper with capitals and punctuation marks in the right places and with the words spelled correctly.
Writing is a muscular and mental operation. If the writing muscles are poorly formed and too weak to work very long, you have a handicap almost as much as you have from a damaged brain.
We never really understood what a severe block of poor writing could be until we met John. He came to us complaining of low grades on essay type exams. His handwriting was unusually poor.
We only suggested that you practice writing. We hope that their grades could be raised by what is called the “halo” effect. That is, the teacher could be rated higher because his paper looked good, not necessarily because he had more to say.
John practiced, his handwriting improved, and he got better grades on the exam questions. It looked like the old “halo” effect was working!

An analysis of the journals showed that Michael did not write easily. The longer he got away with an exam, the worse his writing got, until he finally deteriorated into a beetle. Michael’s writing muscles were neither well-trained nor strong enough to write an entire essay without tiring.
We advise you to train your writing muscles and exercise. We gave him a short three-sentence paragraph and told him to write it over and over again. Try the following procedure, which we suggested to Michael:
1. Sit at a desk or table of comfortable height.
2. Get your arm in a comfortable position.
3. Hold your pencil in a comfortable way, without cramping your hand or fingers.
4. Write several test words. Remember that writing style does not matter. The important thing is to form letters reasonably well and move the pencil easily on the paper.
5. Choose three short sentences and write them over and over again. By the third writing you should have the material you are copying so clearly in your mind that you can focus your attention on controlling your hand.
6. Now insist that your hand make well-formed letters and words without lifting the pencil from the paper.
Practice this way 20 minutes every day. Use different materials for daily practice. Caution: Do not practice for too long at any one time. Your muscles are tired when your writing starts to deteriorate instead of improving with each repetition. It does not serve. Quit for the day. Michael practiced this for 10 days, took another exam in economics, and raised his grade to “B”. The pen may be mightier than the sword.
