Five Myths of Iguanas Care
Many people want iguanas and maybe they have held back on getting one because of these common myths. I’m here to shed some light on an iguana care that has nothing to do with what you may have heard.
Myth #1 Lettuce is the best food source for your pet iguana
There is some truth to this myth as the dark greens and leaf should be fed to your iguana, but when you see the nutritional value of lettuce is almost non-existent. You want to feed your iguana, foods that have a high nutritional value. Lettuce in the long run is not going to do much for your pet’s health.
Myth #2 Iguanas can’t get too big for their cages
Some people have the belief that if they keep their iguana in a small cage or an aquarium, then this stunts its growth. So they find the smallest enclosure possible with the belief that they will have a pocket animal for their entire life. Of course, this is not true. An iguana will grow throughout its life, at a young age it will grow faster, and as it grows older it will grow much more slowly, but it will still grow. If you keep an iguana in a cage or an enclosure that is too small for him, then you invite stress and apathy. No one wants an unhealthy iguana, but that’s exactly what you’ll get by not creating a proper cage or enclosure.
Myth #3 Iguanas must eat gravel
Many people do not think about what kind of substrate they use in the cage. They may think that a gravel substrate is beneficial for their pet for its appearance or that it could help with its digestion, but this is simply not the case. You don’t want to put anything in an enclosure that your iguana will accidentally swallow. Iguanas are constantly sampling their environment by flicking their tongues. And everything that can be accidentally wrong, which should not be, can cause a lot of damage, even death.
Myth #4 Hot rocks are a must for any iguana’s home
You have to remember that hot rocks are great for heating, and that’s it. Iguanas are cold-blooded, so they need help to regulate their body temperature. You want to provide different degrees of temperature in the cage that your iguana can move to regulate. If you use a hot rock, your iguana could literally cook to death. You must have proper lighting in your pet’s home that will allow him to properly regulate his core temperature.
Myth #5 Iguanas must eat insects, pet food, or other animal products
If you look at old iguana books in your library, they support feeding your iguana animal proteins like crickets and the like. You have to remember that an iguana system is best suited to eat only vegetable proteins. When you feed your pets animal protein, it affects their digestive system and ultimately leads to an unhealthy pet, possibly developing gout or even causing kidney disease.
These are just a few myths that proliferate in the world and that you now know are not true.
