Three Strange Criminal Law Stories From Florida

As a follower and writer of criminal law, this author often reports on strange criminal law stories from the State of Florida. Here are some of my favorite vintage stories that I want to share with a wider world.

Orange County. Florida: On Veteran’s Day weekend, 2010, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department became a national laughingstock when it was reported that sheriff’s deputies and members of the Department of Florida Business and Professional Regulation conducted a series of warrantless raids against local Orlando barbershops that made history by arresting 35 people on felony charges of “unlicensed barbering,” after spending several months to investigate the matter. A check of the records revealed that in the past ten years only three people in the entire state of Florida had been sent to prison on such charges. In the instant cases, many of the warrantless sweeps involved officers removing barbershops that had children inside and handcuffing the barbershops and “perp walking” them to police vehicles. At least one felony arrest was made when one of the raiders caught a barber with an unlicensed gun. We learned more that all the barbershops were in African-American and Hispanic neighborhoods.

This surprising report makes one wonder if those neighborhoods are known to be hotbeds of “criminal barbershops?”

New Port Richey, Florida: This strange story is also from 2010. As many of you know, “Four Loko” is an alcoholic drink with caffeine. A New Port Richey man drank four bottles and then went on a naked rampage. Police say the 21-year-old man ran out the back of his house to a house a few blocks away, smashed a sliding glass door and ransacked the house. He then took off his clothes, defecated on the floor and ripped the oven door off its hinges, according to Pasco County deputies. In another house a woman came home to find a naked man covered in blood, sleeping on her bed. He called 911. According to a report, when deputies arrived, the man said, “Why am I being arrested? I didn’t steal anything.” He was charged with two counts of theft.

The title of this little story could read: “Loko Gone Loco.” It is probably best to stay away from this dangerous product.

Hernando County Jail, Florida: 2011. Stranger things happen in jail. An inmate in Hernando County didn’t have enough honeybuns to pay off a gambling debt and was paid with a punch in the face. The inmate admitted that he lost a football bet with a fellow inmate. The loser of the bet said he went to bet the winner’s cell to give him the bear claws he owed him, but it was short of four honey. The winner of the bet was not happy to be stiffed in the bet and punched the loser so hard that he had to be hospitalized. Yes, the bet winner and the puncher. he was arrested on a battery charge.

If it had been a casino game of chance, the loser of the bet might have bet: I will see your single bear claw and raise you four honeybuns…
