Teens Vs. Adults – The Social Media Generational Gap

You don’t need to spend much time with a room full of teenagers to realize that teenagers and adults approach life, almost every aspect, differently. So it’s no surprise that the way teenagers interact with social media and the way adults do it is very different. However, some marketers do not take this information to heart, and thus fail to reach their audience appropriately. Whether your demographic includes or excludes the teenage market, understanding these differences will help you make wise and informed marketing choices on social media.

Adults and teenagers are both active

First, it is important to note that adults and teenagers are active online. The Pew Research Center indicates that 81 percent of teenagers use social media regularly, compared to 72 percent of adults. While teenagers are more prominent, it is not a big difference, and both groups have a large audience to be reached through social sites.

The analysis by age groups is also interesting. High school, those between the ages of 13 and 18, reported a social media activity rate of 81 percent. The largest demographic was the 18-29 year olds, who were 89 percent active. The 30 to 49 group was 78 percent active, falling to 60 percent for 50 to 64 and just 43 percent for the 65 and over crowd.

Facebook leads the pack

One similarity shared between teenagers and adults is their most popular social media platform – Facebook. Both groups use Facebook more than other media platforms. Yet here, the numbers show a bigger statistical gap. Almost all teenagers, 94 percent to be exact, are on Facebook and use it regularly. Only 67 percent of adults say they are on Facebook.

Differences with other platforms

After Facebook, the platforms that the groups connect to are where the main differences lie. Adults can often be found on Pinterest, especially female adults, looking for craft ideas, inspirational quotes and, of course, recipes, but only 1 percent of teens said they spend any time “pinning.” Instagram is also popular with adults who want an easy way to share all the mobile photos they take. Teens, on the other hand, are on Twitter more frequently than other social media platforms other than Facebook. In fact, some teens’ Twitter feeds read almost like a mini-diary of their days.

These numbers show that it is adults who embrace new social media platforms first, not teenagers, despite how tech-savvy today’s teens are. This is an interesting fact, and should make marketers consider their audience carefully when launching a campaign on a new social media platform.

What do the numbers mean?

It is easy for marketers to get too caught up in numbers like these, trying to find meaning where there is none, but these numbers are useful for targeting a specific audience while marketing through social media. For example, if your target market is young adults or teenagers, marketing through Pinterest will not do you much good. If, on the other hand, your target market is young mothers, it will be more effective.

Also, because most people who are active on social media use Facebook, regardless of age, you should concentrate some of your efforts in that profitable market. If you are not, you are missing the potential to reach a large number of potential clients or customers, because almost everyone who is on social media is on Facebook.

This generational gap also shows the importance of knowing your target demographic. If you don’t, you could be wasting your time and money marketing a site that your audience isn’t using. If you do, and take these statistics to heart, you can maximize your social marketing time and money to achieve the greatest impact.
