2011 Ford Mustang – More Power, Better MPG
The 2011 Ford Mustang isn’t exactly new. Most likely, the steed now has a new 3.7-liter DURATEC V6 engine that replaces the 4.0-liter V6 that has long served as the Mustang’s base engine.
Better MPG
The all-aluminum 24-valve engine with dual overhead camshafts is light years ahead of the engine it replaces, and thanks to the fact that it’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, will deliver 31 mpg on the highway and 305 horsepower. The latter achievement represents a 50 percent increase in performance and puts the Ford in the same territory as its arch rival, the Chevy Camaro.
Ford has improved the Mustang significantly for the 2010 model year, but one improvement has been sorely lacking – a modern engine. This hurt Mustang sales when the Chevy Camaro returned to the market after an eight-year absence. Today, the Camaro outsells the Mustang in part due to continued demand for the car, as well as a better choice of engines. Indeed, the V6 Camaro gets 29 mpg on the highway and 304 horsepower, and Chevrolet is expected to improve on those numbers with the 2011 Mustang.
Buyer demand
Ford believes customers will flock to the Mustang’s new V6 because it offers exactly what fans have been asking for. Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of global product development, said: “The Mustang is completely transformed with this new engine. Everything people love about a car remains, and now under the hood is a V-6 engine that uses top-of-the-line technology to deliver the power, feel, fuel efficiency, even sound of the best sports coupes in the world.”
A cold-air intake system and dual exhaust help the stock engine breathe better, allowing the Mustang to cruise past 7,000 rpm and enjoy quicker throttle response. Ford says the V6-equipped Mustang will be able to go 10,000 miles between oil changes, saving customers money while reducing the need to dispose of used oil.
Exhaust Note
Fans will also be pleased to know that Ford’s engineers have worked hard to bring out the new engine’s aggressive, high-performance sounds that can be felt from the intake to the exhaust. A redesigned air intake system has been designed to minimize losses while providing the driver with stimulating suction under hard acceleration. Soft on standby, the dual exhaust opens up with a howl at full tilt, confirming that this car is all about performance.
As usual, various performance packages are available with the Mustang, enhancements such as larger tires, stiffer suspension, tuned stability control and other enhancements. All in all, the base Mustang’s lack of elegance no longer applies, giving drivers the thrills they crave from a steed they’ve long admired.
